We recently connected with Paulla De Souza and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Paulla, thanks for joining us today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
I have many amazing stories that are all connected to my purpose-filled journey with complete strangers.
I lived in Georgetown, Guyana, and had this incredible opportunity to work on a project in Trinidad and Tobago. At that time, I didn’t know anyone there. I was introduced to someone through a mutual friend, and she extended an invitation for me to stay with her.
By the second week, I realized I couldn’t continue living there. Although I was grateful for having a roof over my head while I figured things out, I was unhappy with the neighborhood and certain aspects of the living arrangement. Growing up in a close-knit family, I was accustomed to a certain level of privacy and was not used to sharing a space with many people. This made me feel uncomfortable.
I was working on a project with my mentor, who would pick me up and drop me off as she had to pass where I was staying to get to her studio. One day, she asked me this question: “Paulla, are you comfortable where you are staying?” I felt too embarrassed to answer directly, she didn’t wait for my response. Instead, she offered me me the spare room at the house that had her makeup studio. She explained that it was the home she grew up in and there was currently one other person renting and we would share the common areas. The room had a separate entrance from the rest of the house and she thought it was ideal for me.
I hesitated initially because I wasn’t working consistently enough to afford rent. When she told me she wasn’t asking me to pay rent—just to contribute to the utilities—I was at a loss for words. I felt deeply moved and grateful, and my faith in God’s provision was strengthened. I lived there for three years, the location was perfect, in central location, in a residential neighborhood that was close to public transportation. The best part was that I also able to use the makeup room for my clients as well.
Another quick story involves someone I had never met in person. Our paths crossed when I was mistakenly identified as someone they knew, but our friendship blossomed effortlessly as if we had known each other for a long time.
I had just relocated to Trinidad for the second time and was in the process of settling in. Within the first few weeks of moving, I received my first life-enhancing opportunity: a position on the makeup team for the opening show of the 5th Summit of the Americas. This was a significant event because President Obama was visiting Trinidad and Tobago for the first time.
I submitted all the required documents, and on the day before the closing date, I was told that my photo size I submitted was incorrect. They were very strict about the size for security reasons. I felt deeply disappointed because I had just paid my rent and didn’t have extra money to get another set of photos. I was on the verge of giving up on being part of this historical event.
My friend called to check in with me, and to find out if I was able to submit the application before the deadline. I felt embarrassed to share my situation but decided not to let my pride hold me back. It turned out to be quite humorous when my friend gently scolded me, reminding me that I wasn’t alone and that I had support. The most empowering words that someone can say to you is, “I got your back” and their actions aligned with their words. Within an hour, I had the funds to take a new set of photos and submit them before the deadline expired. The surprising part was that I hadn’t expected to get paid for the gig, but a few weeks later, I received a cheque. A gift of TT$300 rewarded me with TT$8,000.00. I felt very humbled by the entire experience.
These experiences matter to me for several reasons. The most important is understanding that, on our journey to fulfilling our purpose, support is always available. The universe conspires to help us with all of our endeavors and it’s crucial to recognize that this is how God assists us. Refusing help means turning our backs on God.
I encourage everyone to take the leap towards achieving your goals and living your dream, no matter how far-fetched it may seem; it will be worth it. You may not see the entire path, but you have to take the first step.
If I could talk to my younger self, I would say: Don’t be intimidated by the unknown. Don’t be discouraged by adversity, challenges are a part of the process. Everything you need will be provided once you decide to stay the course and continuously step out in faith.
Our destiny is always connected to other people. Be flexible and allow yourself the space to be guided to the right place at the right time. It may not always be comfortable, but it will be purposeful.
Epic achievements are often accomplished outside our comfort zones.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an international hair and makeup stylist with over 20 years of experience in the beauty industry. I was born in Georgetown, Guyana, and I spent most of my adult life living and working in Trinidad and Tobago. My skills and talent opened incredible opportunities for me early in my career, allowing me to travel and work extensively throughout the Caribbean, South America, London, and Accra, Ghana. In 2008 and 2009, the Caribbean Fashion Awards Committee recognized me as one of the top 5 nominees for Best Caribbean Makeup Artist. It was a moment I will always cherish, and it felt amazing to receive such recognition. The first ceremony took place in Trinidad and Tobago, while the 2009 event was held in Barbados.
I moved to Houston, Texas, in July 2022 and am currently working on rebranding myself. I received valuable guidance from a Bridal Coach, which has been instrumental in this process. Starting over in a new place and country, with limited financial resources and without anyone knowing about my talents, presents its challenges. However, I am grateful for my past experiences, which have prepared me for this journey. I am taking advantage of the opportunities available to help fund my progress, and I continue to trust the process, as time and dedication yield the best results.
Fashion and beauty have always felt like an innate part of me. My mom is a seamstress, which exposed me to fashion from a very young age. I was fascinated by how she could transform her clients’ choices from the pages of fashion books or magazines into tangible, wearable forms.
I believe my journey into the industry began unintentionally; in hindsight, my career chose me. I traveled to Trinidad to attend cosmetology school, and while there, I joined a modeling agency called House of Jacqui. One day, the owner asked me, “Have you ever thought about taking a makeup class?” At that time, my answer was no, as I wasn’t even aware that I could pursue a career as a makeup artist. Nevertheless, I contacted the recommended instructor and signed up for eight personalized classes to improve my makeup skills. During the first session, I was asked, “Do you know that you have a natural flair for makeup?” That question changed the trajectory of my life. She became my mentor and so much more.
As I progressed through the sessions, it became clear that I was being groomed to work as a professional makeup artist. I embraced this process wholeheartedly because everything aligned perfectly, including the challenges that came with migrating and working in another country, it all eventually worked out in my favor. I have been blessed with opportunities to work in many areas of the beauty industry.
On your path to accomplish your goals you will face a series of unknown moments that may present themselves as an obstacles and or challenges, you will have moments when you can see a way or even see a positive outcome for your situation. I take this opportunity to share, there are no obstacles when you are walking in purpose, there are only hidden opportunities, one have to be patient enough to allow things to unfold. Stay the course.
I am most proud of being a trusted voice for women across the globe; they trust my perspective beyond just my expertise. The first time I realized the impact of my work was at an event in Grenada. A client who owned a duty-free beauty business invited me to host a special event for his loyal customers. I arrived in Grenada 2 days prior and helped to promote the event through radio shows and television interviews.
On the day of the event, entering the hotel ballroom was a surprise. Above the stage was a banner reading, “Welcome Beauty & Skincare Workshop by International Makeup Artist Paulla De Souza.” I conducted a demonstration on my model and answered questions, and afterward, I noticed a line of women waiting for one-on-one consultations with me. It felt surreal.
I remain grateful for my unique ability to impact many women’s lives, currently, I work with a luxury retail brand as a Beauty Stylist, often it is through simple actions like showing them how to enhance or correct their eyebrows after a poor experience with a brow stylist, that has the biggest impact. Additionally, I assist women in selecting the right complexion products and complementary skincare products. The sparkle in their eyes and the smiles on their faces is my greatest reward.
What sets me apart as a beauty stylist is my passion for enhancing a woman’s beauty rather than disguising it. Makeup should complement a woman, allowing her natural beauty to shine through rather than overshadow it. I view myself more as a beauty, skincare, and self-care coach because I provide guidance on the importance of skincare and reconnecting with one’s inner beauty. My approach to beauty is holistic.
This empowering beauty experience focuses on boosting women’s self-confidence beyond makeup. Whether I’m working with a bride, actress, entertainer, business executive, or a woman applying makeup for the first time, my services are customized to suit each individual. I learned early that makeup is not a one-size-fits-all experience; it has to be customized to complement the individual for example our facial features, eye shapes, complexion, and undertones are quite different.
I enjoy offering one-on-one consultations to clients who wish to learn how to apply their makeup at home. These sessions combine consultation, hands-on makeup application, and coaching, lasting anywhere from two to four hours. Depending on the package, I can also accompany clients shopping for products. The sessions can be conducted in person or remotely.
These classes are tailored to each client’s preferences and are intimate and special. We can discuss anything, and I trust my intuition to guide us as needed. Often, solutions or words of encouragement arise in the moment.
Outside of my beauty services, I love blogging about my life lessons and observations on topics such as spirituality, long-distance relationships (which can work if you find the right partner, I have proof), friendships, and anything that offers guidance or inspiration.
My passion for continuous learning drives me to believe in the possibility of living a life of freedom that begins from within.
Stoic philosophy resonates deeply with me. A quote by Seneca captures my belief perfectly: “We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.” This highlights our tendency to entertain fearful thoughts, creating worst-case scenarios in our minds without having all the facts—it’s often pure speculation.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I will start by sharing a few mindset shifts that is necessary for our adventure with life: “Flexibility is the key to success in every area of our lives, from navigating relationships to unfamiliar spaces and places.” When I learned the importance of being flexible, life appeared less stressful. I realized that surrender is not a weakness; it is a superpower. When things are not going according to plan, I recognized it was okay to take a few steps back to reassess. Things always have a way of working out for our highest good when we learn to let go and follow the clues. At least, that is how my life seems to have worked out thus far.
My greatest shift regarding my business occurred during the pandemic. At that time, I was living in Trinidad and Tobago, our industry was completely shut down from March 2020 to about September 2021, with mandatory mask-wearing. There were no events happening not even weddings. During this period, I noticed that many women were investing in eyelash extensions and brow shaping. Over the years, I had slowly built a small-brow clientele alongside my makeup artistry business. Before the popularity of individual eyelash extensions, I offered extension flares, which were inexpensive and took about 30 to 45 minutes to apply.
The application process for individual lash extensions is much more intricate and time-consuming, but I decided it was time for an upgrade. I invested in a mannequin head and began my journey to acquire the necessary skills. Lacking the funds for formal classes, I turned to the University of YouTube and learned from professional instructors. Once I mastered the art of separating the lashes, I offered a few friends and clients complimentary lash extensions to build my speed and perfect my lash styling techniques. My first few full sets were challenging and took me over four hours each. I was grateful to have people who trusted me with their eyes and willingly share their time to be my model.
Overcoming the challenges of developing a new skill was worth it, as I was able to expand my services and grow my business during a difficult time.
Currently, I am navigating a major life shift after relocating to Houston, Texas, from Trinidad and Tobago. Leaving behind everything familiar and comfortable to start over in a new country—one I had never visited before moving—has been a humbling experience. I arrived in Houston in July 2022, knowing only my partner. The question I am asked a lot, is what brought you to Houston? My short answer is LOVE. Our paths crossed during our travels, in the departure lounge of Guyana’s International airport, where we first laid eyes on one another. He was heading home to Atlanta, and I was returning to Trinidad. As fate would have it, we were seated in the same row on the plane, he sat at the window seat and me at the aisle, we did not say a word to each other until we were waiting to deplane (A story for another time, big smiles.)
Fast forward I am in Houston, Texas; I began an interesting journey into the unknown and the unfamiliar. I immersed myself in learning a new culture, adapting to a new way of life, meeting new people, and getting to know my partner—all while trying to reset my business and to find my way. I felt like I was stripped of everything, I mean EVERYTHING! I was completely in surrender mode by force. Trusting the process while relearning who I am and what do I really desire for my life in this new season. This is a huge pivot. However, it’s often said that greatness is unstoppable, it cannot be not achieved in our comfort zones. The most significant accomplishments happen when we are willing to explore uncomfortable, places and spaces.
In the two-plus years that I have been in Houston, I have been fortunate to receive amazing opportunities that have opened my consciousness to what is possible. I am grateful that Houston has welcomed me so warmly. I was surprised by how easily I adapted here; the people I encounter daily are exceptionally kind, courteous, friendly, and generous. I receive so many compliments on a daily basis sometimes I have to pinch myself. From day one, I felt welcomed, like I came home, which made my transition smooth.
One of my most uncanny experiences, is reconnecting with a high school friend from Guyana. The last time we saw each other was over 40 years ago, and I had no idea she was living in Houston until one day I heard a familiar voice calling my name in a department store. It turns out that we live just 20 minutes apart.
My ongoing challenge is to remind myself to extend self-compassion and grace so that I don’t feel overwhelmed by the pace of my progress. I am grateful that I am in a good place, surrounded by good people and I trust that, with time, everything I desire will manifest in effortless perfect ways.
My key takeaway from my relocation and resettling process is that being in a place where no one knows me has taught me some of my most humbling and life-enhancing lessons. Being in an unfamiliar environment has helped me to reconnect with my most authentic self. I am constantly reminded that “My Presence Has Power.”
I view being able to share my story on this platform as a huge blessing. And I am excited to write and unfold the next best chapters of my story.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that I have the opportunity to do what I love, and it doesn’t feel like work. The rewards are multidimensional; no two days are alike, and I never get bored because it is so multifaceted. One day, I may be working on a movie set in an outdoor location, such as a beach or at someone’s home with a breathtaking view of mountains and the ocean. On another occasion, I may find myself in a corporate office or a hotel room with a view.
On some weekends, I can be working in a beautiful settings, such as with a bride and her bridal party or at other times, collaborating closely with a fashion designer and her stylist to bring her creative vision to life. This may involve custom blending colors to perfect a particular shade of eyeshadow, for example. Additionally, I had the opportunity to introduce an unknown luxury makeup brand made in Paris to Trinidad and Tobago. As their brand ambassador, I hosted workshops and special events for makeup artists and everyday women. It was incredibly satisfying to see the brand thrive and become something beloved by many.
While I work on my personal brand, I currently hold a position as a Beauty Stylist at a luxury retail outlet. In this role, I meet many women who often feel overwhelmed when choosing the right lipstick, matching their foundation, and selecting skincare formulas that suit their skin types. I affectionately refer to my workspace as the “Fun Factory,” as I genuinely enjoy guiding them to achieve their desired results. My role is to simplify the process and make it enjoyable at the same time. I thrive on their energy and remain patient throughout the journey, ensuring we are both satisfied with their choices. Working in the retail space is very dynamic, I have all kinds of interesting encounters. Although I share my expertise and provide guidance, I always aim for it to be a collaborative experience. At the end of our sessions, many women express a wish to take me home—it’s quite endearing!
I find great joy in one-on-one sessions, whether they involve a personalized makeup class or working with a bride. I love every step of the process, starting with the initial phone call, which usually serves as a consultation. I take the time to ensure she has a consistent skincare routine that complements her skin type. Listening to all the details of her vision for her special day helps me with my creative process. I always conduct a trial run with my brides to collaborate on achieving the perfect look.
And then there is the feedback, which is my favorite part. Hearing someone say, “I received so many compliments; I felt confident and beautiful,” melts my heart every time. I truly enjoy helping women overcome their challenges and enhance their looks. It brings me so much joy.
