We were lucky to catch up with Paulina Flores recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Paulina, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Bringing people together through pictures to share memories that will stay forever in that moment of time. I’ve lost loved ones and even in this day and age of snapping photos on a phone, going through old photographs gives such an authentic feeling of the moment it was taken. Experiencing the emotions, the environment, the era in time it was taken makes me feel connected to that person even if they have passed.
Paulina, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a non-average gal! As a wife and former teen mother I always want my family to look at me and feel proud. My photography journey began when I was small, my mom would photograph abstract art in Dallas, and that’s where my love affair of holding a camera began. She would take me to places all around town and let me model for her, but one day she turned the camera over to me and let me take a turn. I instantly knew I loved capturing this beautiful world through a lens. When I had my first child at fifteen I thought my life was over career wise and I’d always have to work a job I hated to provide for my family. After my youngest child became more independent I “reemurged” . I dabbled in taking photos of family and friends again, but it wasn’t until last year that I finally felt confident enough to make the jump. After lots of prayer I felt the peace to do what I’ve always dreamed of. My hope is to one day be a special niche photographer and capture people as they cross over. To some this may seem morbid, but to me it is the most beautiful concept. My grandfather passed away in 2015, and the evening before his passing his children, and granddaughters spent the night in the room with him. I wish I still had a photo of that memory because although it was a sad time we still found joy in being together and loving eachother. In fact we still talk about now almost a decade later. My husband’s grandmother was in hospice and a few days before her passing her children and grandchildren gathered around her to pray, and it felt electric to photograph such a tender and sweet moment in time. They were so appreciative I captured it for them to keep forever, and that is why I adore photography. Giving people a keepsake of lifes raw moments.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
My precious husband purchased my camera for me years ago. He knows how much I’ve always wanted to pursue this as more than just a side hustle, but rather a passion.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Word of mouth. I don’t like posting in groups or on social media too much because I want my work to speak for itself. The experience I give to my clients is not just “Stand there and pose”. Authenticity really comes being in the moment and creating a space where a person feels comfortable to let lose and be themselves.
