We recently connected with Paula Cruz and have shared our conversation below.
Paula, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I wish I had started pursuing my work while I was still in University. I felt like I couldn’t because it was “the next stage” and something to look forward to. I could have started doing work outside of my art classes, but I didn’t and saved my ideas for later. It wasn’t until my last semester that I started doing my own thing. I had my work shown in a gallery in school and I realized that I could have been doing that for a while. I feel that not only did I miss out on that, but I also could have grown my early portfolio and experimented more.
Paula, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I always wanted to pursue a career in the arts. I went to Douglas Anderson School of the Arts and double majored in Drawing/Painting and Art History. Then I went to the University of North Florida and majored in Art History. I mostly focus on drawing and painting, but also work in printmaking, sculpture, and embroidery. I work with different styles like realism to abstract, and I enjoy bringing levity into my pieces.
Can you share your view on NFTs? (Note: this is for education/entertainment purposes only, readers should not construe this as advice)
I do not believe that NFTs are responsible and do not support the buying or selling of them. They are environmentally damaging and unethical at this stage. The fact that we are not even fixing the current climate problems is irresponsible and NFTs only add to that. There are more ethical ways to buy art and support artists. NFTs are a quick money grab at the expense of the Earth.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding thing to me is the reaction of people seeing my work in person. I like to see their initial reaction followed by their in the moment feedback. It is an honest way to see what people think of your work and very satisfying to experience.
