We recently connected with Paul Perito and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Paul thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Over the course of your career, have you seen or experienced your field completely flip-flop or change course on something?
I’m proud to say that I introduced a major U-Turn in the field of surgical treatment of erectile dysfunction with the development of a minimally invasive penile prosthesis (the Perito Implant®) in 2007. The field was stagnant before then and patient outcomes weren’t in a place I thought was acceptable. Rather than tread water, I decided to build a raft.
Since then, I’ve trained over 1000 urologists in the technique and with the implant. When you consider the number of patients 1000 urologists will see over the course of a career, the impact on men’s health is staggering.
For what I’ve done in urologic surgery, I’m also doing in the field of male genital cosmetics. We’re launching an entirely new business model in the field that’s centered on expert care, provable outcomes, and continuous progress and improvement.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into medicine via a straightforward path: I got a BA in Chemistry at Emory University, enrolled in Maryland Medical School, attended the University of Miami for General Surgery and Urology, and finished my Fellowship at the University of South Australia. 15 F’in years.
Since then, I’ve been practicing urology for close to 30 years and have owned and operated the highest-volume penile implant clinic in the world for fifteen. It’s not an exaggeration to say that I’ve helped lead my field into the 21st century through education of other urologists, research in the field of urologic surgery, and treating thousands of patients.
Having had emergency surgery and treatment for cancer this year has reinforced what I’ve been committed to: It’s about the patient. To get the best outcomes, you need to constantly stay at the top of your game, and even more importantly, educate others within your field. I’ve worked hard to earn my reputation and have little to no use for convention or ceremony if it gets in the way of progress.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for expanding your clientele is to be the best there is at what you do. It’s to surround and associate yourself with the absolute best, most knowledgeable colleagues, and to not shy away from breaking barriers. Case in point: Few, if any, other urologists were willing to treat HIV+ patients in Miami, which was where expert urologic care was most needed. Where others dodged the topic entirely, I dove into it and gave a talk at the Raleigh Hotel called “Gay Sex on South Beach.” I had nearly 200 attendees. Prudishness in the field of urology prevents care and can cost lives. There’s no room for it.
Regarding growing that clientele, my Father always said “If you want something done go to the busiest person”. The way to remain busy in my field, and I believe most fields with a product, is to have a reproducible result. No sugarcoating. No snake-oil. Deliver only pure transparency.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
It may sound cliche, but I am one of those doctors who has never read prose since college. Rather than rely on books or essays, my patients and the urologists I’ve trained have had the biggest impact. My patients generally have more detailed and informed questions than most of the colleagues whom I’ve trained. I had an active Youtube channel (mostly for surgical demonstrations) and my research fellow Dr. Alfredo Suarez-Sarmiento, Jr. helped me to start an ongoing series called “Meet the Penis” where I, along with colleagues, respond to viewer and patient questions with transparency, ethics, and candidness. We have tens of thousands of subscribers and millions of views.
