We were lucky to catch up with Paul Pedulla recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Paul thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Woke up one morning in 2006 with a sudden urge to paint. I had no prior experience as an artist, but always excelled in art as a grade school student. As soon as I made the decision to paint, doors began to open. I signed up for classes, had paintings accepted into juried art shows, attracted the interest of galleries, and received some great press about my work. It was clear I was on the right path.
Paul, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My contemporary paintings are decidedly dreamy. They are representational, yet built on memory and imagination. There’s a simplicity that draws you in and a depth that finds you frequently discovering something new. What you see is a moment, often revealing a relationship between neighboring houses, a road and the landscape, the sky and the sea, figures in an environment, or a window and the world it views. I have been featured in numerous publications, blogs, videos, and podcasts. My work has been singled out by art professionals, educators, and interior designers from Seattle to New England, and can be found in homes and businesses on four continents.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am often asked this question. My only goal is to share the passion in my heart and soul via my work. Painting what I love seems to bring out the passion in others, too. For me, having any kind of conscious career goal may limit me, since I don’t really know what the universe has in store for me. I prefer to stay in the moment without any goals. So far, the universe has exceeded any goal I could have dreamed up.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The story that keeps getting repeated is when someone looks at my paintings and says they feel calm and peaceful. Then they smile and say my work reminds them of experiences growing up in their hometowns or on family vacations. I hear this type of reaction over and over again. Although most of my work is not geographically specific, there is a familiarity in each piece that hits home with most viewers from both the United States and other countries. And my minimalist approach allows for varied interpretations that people will often personalize.
