We recently connected with Paul James Houghton and have shared our conversation below.
Paul James, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Looking back, what’s an important lesson you learned at a prior job?
Prior to my career in film and launching the Dreamotion brand, I dedicated many years building a successful and rewarding career in design and design operations, resigning as a VP at the peak of it all to focus on film, the studio and branding activities. In addition to the creative benefits, the roles provided a vast range of experience and education in leading large cross-functional teams and developing and managing multi-million dollar budgets and complex timing plans, which has significantly contributed to the ongoing success of Dreamotion’s projects and brand.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For as long as I can remember, I have always been able to balance and harmonize creative gifts with operational skills, and this is certainly evident along my professional path. I’m proud to be an accomplished screenwriter, director and creative producer, while also founding and running the Dreamotion brand. I believe it is the combination and magnitude of experience, expertise and achievements attained over multiple careers which helps elevate Dreamotion above competitors, while providing clients and projects with exceptional yet affordable quality. On a personal note; diversity, equality, inclusion and kindness are all very important to me and I continuously seek ways to demonstrate this throughout my personal and professional life.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Every team member working on a project, production and/or product should be essential to it. Therefore, every contribution is of value and everyone is directly relevant to the overall success. It is important to positively communicate this to the individuals within the team and the team collectively, while also acknowledging upfront there may be unexpected situations, hurdles and even walls to overcome. Which you will face, navigate and eliminate together. Conveying and delivering sincere appreciation, recognition and thanks must be standard practice. And realizing kindness, respect and care shown through actions is typically absorbed and retained by the recipients will significantly contribute to a positive environment. It is also important to openly express excitement, passion, drive, ambition and the joy of working on every project with the team. All this builds trust, loyalty, longevity, solid bonds and helps to install and maintain morale, which in turn provides higher quality results all round. And I completely acknowledge, value and respect the ongoing success of the Dreamotion brand is largely based on the team, their expertise, passion and desire to work on Dreamotion projects.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Reputation is built by continuously delivering quality results, which are aligned with the original expectations outlined in the plan, timing and budget, and by this being communicated to others by the clients you serve and the team you work with. Continuously recognizing every project is a direct reflection of Dreamotion, the team and me personally is key to maintaining the best possible reputation.
