We were lucky to catch up with Paul Gee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul, thanks for joining us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
There is struggle in every walk of life. Whether it’s mental or physical we all have to overcome something. That being said being an artist and a creative is something I am born to do. Yes, there are mental struggles. Doubts, questions concerns, and uncertainty. But I am more than confident in my gifts and my purpose, I am very sure I am happier now, than if I were to be working a 9 to 5. Lucrative or not. If I wasn’t doing what I was doing now I wouldn’t feel whole. I wouldn’t feel complete and I wouldn’t feel like I was doing what I was supposed to be doing. I always wonder what it would be like if I had a 9-5 or regular job that had nothing to do with entertainment and music. But the only scenario I can come up with is that I would have more money and that’s not even a guarantee because my needs are definitely provided for, doing what I do now. Being an artist is more than just expressing yourself. Its self-discovery, evolution, and being an artist forces you to grow. The necessary steps for my mental and spiritual growth have all surrounded around everything I’ve created and produced. Evaluating life, producing my visions and overcoming things, helped me learn who I was. I had that thought, my life now or 9-5, last week during rehearsal for my off-Broadway show Henry box Brown in which I play the lead. But that thought went away instantly when I realized how blessed I am as an artist and a creative and how fortunate I am to have the things I have. Life would be so boring. I’m convinced of that. so those thoughts don’t last long and they don’t come around as much. But when they do come around I would think “I guess I’d have a nice apartment a better car and more spending money” but I’m always reminded I wouldn’t have the friends, girlfriend, or memories I have now. And I wouldn’t trade that for a better apartment and a better car. Typing this makes me so grateful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
What I do now grew from who I am/was as a person. I am an actor, artist, producer entertainer, and creator. And everything intertwines together. Fell in love with creating moments and expressing myself at a young age so from Acting came to singing and rapping, and then from the singing and rapping came the love of impacting a crowd and led to hosting, then from there, I realized I needed to create my own opportunities. So my creativity led to different business ventures that helped provide and supply my life and my career. ‘
My goal, whether it be., entertainment, acting, music, or hosting is to leave a lasting impact and inspire people to feel good about life. Whether it be on zoom with corporate clients with my virtual game nights business, on stage performing my music to people rapping lyrics back to me or relating to people I would never cross paths with, on a stage telling a story, I am confident and grateful that I can leave an impact on peoples feelings and mind with what I do. That’s what inspires me to show up and never leave anything unturned when I perform or get on set.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
.My goal is to influence and inspire people with the essence of transparency. That is the mission I made for myself when I was 18 years old. I saw the lack of transparency and truth in some people around me and in myself and I felt I needed to constantly aim for that. In my music and anything I produce, I try to display that. The conentt will never stop because I’m constantly trying to be transparent and trying to grow and trying to inspire people. Letting people know it’s OK to feel, it’s OK to not be perfect but we can try to be the best we can be.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding thing about being an artist and creative is that you get to shape your life. Every decision you make is either gonna benefit you or teach you a lesson if you are willing to receive it. And I believe everything, the mistakes and the triumphs all these you the way you’re supposed to be. I believe God steers you. if you go along for the ride it will be a smooth journey. This journey has taught me faith past what I thought I could understand. Being an artist and creative allows you to see different dimensions and platforms which then reveals different scenarios to you and allows you to realize you need to constantly grow to exist. And I think that’s one of the most important things in life. My ambition won’t allow me to stay stagnant so I am literally forced to grow and learn and adapt or I will cease to exist the way I’m supposed to exist. I think being an artist and creative is one of the most beautiful ways to go about life. You’re constantly creating, you’re constantly learning, you’re constantly growing, and you’re constantly expressing. art reflects life. So being an artist and creative allows me to navigate life the most colorful way possible.
