We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paul Burns a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Paul, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve always been interested in music since the age 13 when my dad introduced me to it. But at the age 18, right around the time I was done with high school, that’s when I took music very serious. I took a few music classes to get started but I was mainly self taught and had to learn everything from scratch. I knew what I was good at and the thing that made me truly happy was playing the drums. That’s all I really wanted to do with my life and nothing more. Till this day, I wanna keep pursing that dream until the day I die.
Paul, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well that’s a great question, for starters I think it comes down to determination and constantly putting in the hard work everyday. I see a lot of performers putting in the work but don’t really show that they truly enjoy what they’re doing, especially playing live on stage. I’ve always enjoyed playing live shows and recording music and do my absolute best to put 100 percent of my effort into it. My thing has always been to put on a show that people won’t forget. That’s how you stick out as opposed to others. At least that’s what I think.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My end goal is to inspire as many people as I could in this lifetime. We don’t have that many role models in todays modern world. I think it’s always important to inspire one another to grow as a person. As a musician what really puts a smile on my face is when a random fan comes up to me and says “great performance, I really wanna take music serious now.” Seeing my friends taking music more serious has always been great to see and it’s nice that we can share this journey together.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It gives me hope and something to always look forward to everyday. Unfortunately not many people have that and live a simple lifestyle. Being able to entertain others and perform in-front of an audience is very self rewarding. People can see you putting in the hard work and putting it out on stage shows a lot in an artist. It’s all subjective how you look at it at the end of the day but I think being able to wake up knowing you have a passion is definitely worth living for. I’m very blessed I get to do this and not take it for granted.
