We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paul Birdsong a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Paul, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Being a recording artist that is connected to multiple platinum artists and major labels there is certain expectations as to the content of your music, I chose to use my music for activism which was a huge risk I had to take alone at first. Now, I have songs coming out with Chris Brown, Kevin Gates, Cappadonna and Dizzy Wright and they’re all positive and relevant to today’s struggles.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I come from gangs, and originally that was what my music, my graffiti, my beats and my life consisted of. As I became an activist and got deeper and deeper into activism my life, my music and my graffiti changed. I now use my talents to enlighten and liberate my people while simultaneously defending my people and our culture from oppression and vultures. All Power To The People ✊🏾
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
At one time, I was supposed to do a project called “Cane” featuring Kendrick Lamar. This was an opportunity I was given due to my connections in my set. Thing is, those connections wasn’t solid. I ended up losing that opportunity and for a while I kind of lost hope because I felt that was my big break.
I kept going though.
Eventually I made my own connections,
I can hit major artists JR Writer, Sadat X and Tragedy Khadafi personally on my own. I don’t have to go through others to secure contracts and make hits with major artists anymore. I kept working and showing up and plugging away until it paid off.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I hate the watered down state of hip-hop. You really have to listen to old stuff to get inspired or enlightened by what you’re listening to. I wanna be that one that brings it back and is consistent. Not one heavy joint and a bunch of filler but consistent dope hip hop.
