We were lucky to catch up with Paty & Carlos Magallanes Martínez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Paty & Carlos, appreciate you joining us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
It is a reality that many diseases nowadays are due to the consumption of so-called processed and industrialized foods. As they say, “we are what we eat.” Fortunately, more and more people are becoming conscious of reading product labels to examine the nutritional value of the food sold on store shelves. Although there is still much to be done, the market for healthy foods is growing in the United States and around the world.
At Mayanshul, we are proud to offer original recipes with natural and healthy ingredients that are high in fiber, low in calories, without added sugar, without added fats, and without artificial preservatives, inspired by Mexican mestizo cuisine. Our line of Puebla and Oaxaca moles is artisanally crafted in small batches to maintain freshness and quality. Paty & Carlos, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Mayanshul was born thanks to our constant family trips to the southeastern region of Mexico. We are familiar with every corner of Mexico and its culinary traditions, and we want to share them with the entire world. We are extremely proud that Mexico is considered the sixth-best tourist destination globally, not only for its culture, historical monuments, or beaches but also for its gastronomy. In fact, since 2010, traditional Mexican cuisine has been included in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
We have worked hard to develop recipes from traditional Mexican gastronomy, incorporating functional superfoods that are produced in Mexico. Our goal is to offer a premium, healthy, nutritious, and sustainable alternative for our customers to enjoy the guilt-free experience of the true flavors of Mexican cuisine.
After a year of preparation and market research, our small family-owned company was established in Mexico in 2020, unexpectedly coinciding with the onset of the pandemic. It was a very challenging year for all businesses, especially for recently established ones like ours. We persevered thanks to e-commerce: our website, social media, and Amazon Mexico. During the first two years, we focused on building brand awareness and testing the value proposition of our products. Finally, in March 2022, we expanded our product line to the United States through the Amazon platform and, in partnership with a business associate, established our company, Magma Traders LLC, based in San Antonio, Texas. It has been incredibly exciting to witness the acceptance of our Poblano and Oaxacan mole sauces and how they have been sold in practically every state of this vast country, including Hawaii, Alaska, and the Pacific Mariana Islands.
Recently, we have also added hand-painted Talavera ceramic products for home decoration to our commercial offering. At Mayanshul, we are working directly with small Mexican artisans, committed to achieving fair trade by valuing the purchase of their products above market prices and offering 100% upfront payment. Mexican artisans are creators of beauty, and with their hands, they work magic, touching nature to convey the soul, love, and heart to humanity.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Our company started operations through the Amazon Mexico Marketplace. The advantage of starting sales through e-commerce is that the initial investment is lower compared to having a physical store. Additionally, your products can reach a larger market than a traditional business. It was very important for us to have tested our products first in Mexico, and we discovered a demand for authentic and traditional moles for people with a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to our business partnership in San Antonio, Texas, in the next three months, we plan to sell on other marketplaces such as Walmart, Etsy, eBay, and our website, with the hope of generating employment opportunities.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
For now, our main sales channel is through e-commerce. Undoubtedly, the best source of new customers has been through digital marketing and advertising campaigns both within and outside the Amazon Marketplace. We have created a community of loyal customers who have recommended our products to others. The best advertising for new customers has been the reviews, which are the “word of mouth” of e-commerce. Our next goal, in collaboration with our business partner, is to achieve wholesale distribution. Although we are targeting a growing market, the nature of our products involves low production compared to processed and industrialized foods. However, we have the capacity to produce over 20,000 pounds of mole per month in the short term. We would love to see our products on the shelves of specialized supermarkets and in stores at U.S. airports very soon.
