We were lucky to catch up with Patty Rice recently and have shared our conversation below.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
As a writer and producer dedicated to the faith-based genre, I advocate for clean content that resonates with audiences. My portfolio includes short films like “2020,” “The Shirt,” “The Assignment,” and “Five Minutes with Jesus.” Through my production company, Christian Culture Entertainment, LLC, I am actively developing a lineup of uplifting television and film projects aimed at entertaining adults and families. Additionally, I lead DMV Faith-based Filmmakers, a professional networking and educational organization that brings together East Coast filmmakers through in-person events.
My writing journey began in the late 1990s when I transitioned into professional writing with novels. Two of my works were published by Simon and Schuster, earning me recognition as a national bestselling author. To date, I have authored nine books, including non-fiction titles focused on topics such as marriage and overcoming grief. In 2011, I expanded my creative pursuits by diving into screenwriting, completing a respected program for faith-based writers in Los Angeles. Since then, I’ve written and produced various short projects and am currently in the development phase of two feature films.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my creative work is the opportunity to impact fellow filmmakers by demonstrating that artistry can be rooted in integrity. I take great satisfaction in editing scripts, serving as a sounding board, and providing balanced advice, all while offering resources and assistance without any strings attached. In an industry where gatekeepers often mismanage their status and power, artists need encouragement and authentic interactions with others to validate their talent and help them advance their careers. I am proud to have contributed to many filmmakers successfully completing their projects and cultivating meaningful relationships that propel their careers forward.
A young lady in her 20’s who served as 1st AD on two of my projects, just recently finished shooting her first narrative short. I was proud that she was inspired to pursue her dream of writing and producing her own project.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I would love to see more funding made available for independent projects outside the formulaic industry system. Unique and emerging voices have a right to be heard and with proper funding and mentoring, independent filmmakers can impact society in new, meaningful ways.
