Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Patty Reyes. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Patty thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
She’s my hero she’s my biggest supporter my mother. Growing up I remember my mother always being a strong woman she was so selfless always went above and beyond for the people she loved a true warrior. During the very beginning stages of brainstorming Carnalas Cosmetics we got the horrible news after finding my mother unconscious that she had liver failure that had turned into cancer and we didn’t have much time left. I felt like my world stopped I was not ready to loose my mother and I knew she had so much fight in her I asked her if she wanted to continue and she said yes that’s all it took for me. From trying to start my brand to now becoming a full time care taker I had to advocate for my mother I did everything in my power to get her on a transplant list while she fought the disease I fought depression anxiety and so much on my plate but I just knew I couldn’t loose my Guerrera(Warrior). April 2021 we got the call we had been praying on and she recieved her first transplant. She was strong and did so good through thr process she never lost her faith or hope a year later she recieved her 2nd transplant and I thank God today that my mother is in great health and never gave up.
Patty, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Carnalas Cosmetics started as girl talk I was out with a girlfriend and I told her that I wanted to create my own lip ware brand. I love the way a good red lipstick makes me feel *UNSTOPPABLE * I wanted to share that same feeling I got with my homegirls. It was my dream. Growing up I battled with depression and lack of confidence from past trauma , but I knew I wanted to help women feel better about themselves even if I wasn’t. Not knowing Carnalas became an outlet to my depression. I began experimenting and making lipgoss in my kitchen. The chemistry behind it mixing colors and scents together was so therapeutic for me. With endless experimenting and motivation from friends & family I began to get gain confidence and my creativity ignited. Mixing batch after batch I finally created the perfect consistency and texture and immediately shared it with my girls and they loved it. I knew I had created something amazing because it was hand crafted and organically made. I couldn’t wait to share it with the world. Carnalas is slang for Sisterhood and through Sisterhood I want to uplift women and encourage that we can do anything we set our minds to.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was that my past experiences and my past trauma do not define who I am. It was a journey to regain my self confidence to fulfill the intention that I had with my brand.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Showing up authentically and being true to myself. I’ve been very transparent with my story and struggles from day one and I believe my clients appreciate that. My goal will always be to inspire that we are capable of so much we just have to believe in ourselves.
