We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Patty Farmer a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Patty, thanks for joining us today. What’s something crazy or unexpected that’s happened to you or your business

Public speaking terrified me. The very thought of being in front of so many people wearing what I like to call a soap opera dress and teaching or motivating others made me so sick to my stomach that for 18 months after I first spoke on a stage I was violently ill. Every. Single. Time. But I had made a promise to myself that I would say yes to every speaking opportunity until I stopped being sick. Everything changed when I decided to hire a speaking coach. What I learned was life-changing. 1. It’s not about me, it is about my audience and those I serve.
2. It is not about changing who I am but choosing audiences and speaking in front of those that want to hear it the way I speak.
Those two insights allowed me to shift my perspective which enabled me to become an international speaker and to be able to do my own international events and retreats. Now, 90% of my clients are speakers or entrepreneurs who want to use speaking as a marketing strategy.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background for context?

On a personal note… Patty is married to her best friend and the love of her life and together they have raised six daughters. Patty believes that raising her daughters is the inspiration (and fortitude) that led to her passion and purpose of working with women and teaching them to empower themselves, own their voice, trust their gut, and believe in their heart that they can achieve anything they are willing to work for. Her motto is “Lead with contribution, and compensation will follow” and her mission is to teach women that relationships are the currency in today’s business environment and the key is collaboration over competition and to choose to live your life by design and with an abundance mindset.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?

I was raised in Las Vegas and had basically two careers in one. I was in the mortgage business and I also owned a boutique marketing agency which worked well as a strategy to bring in Realtors and other collaboration partners for my mortgage company. Marketing is my passion and my zone of genius and I loved both careers. But it all changed in one day in 2008…

My husband who is in the aviation business, came home and told me we needed to move to Dallas, TX. That was very hard for me, but luckily since the mortgage industry crashed in 2008 we were able to sell and move before the crash.

The day we moved, I was sitting in the living room waiting for the furniture to be delivered and having a pity party about moving when I had a breakthrough and said to myself… “Patty, you need to shift your thinking. You now live in a metroplex of millions of people AND you are in the people business. This is an opportunity.” So I stood up and went to the refrigerator and on a sticky note I wrote 100,000. When my husband came home he said “what is the meaning of the 100,000?” I shared that in the next year I was going to meet 100,000 people and I was going to make $100,000. I did it in 9 months by networking and collaborating with others who also served my market and the rest is history.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?

The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been two things. 1. Relationship Marketing and 2. Partnership Marketing. I have applied this strategy to my marketing & media company, as a speaker, podcast host and guest, a magazine publisher as well as an event producer. I believe that relationships are the currency in today’s business environment and collaboration with those you have built relationships with is the key to success and joy.
