We were lucky to catch up with Patrick Myles recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Patrick thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I wanted to make rap my beats as young as 11 or 12. I think it was around 6th grade. I started hearing tons of Hip Hop at that time and fell in love with the genre. I never wanted to actually rap but I wanted to either be a DJ or producer. The sound of rap was just implanted in my head at that point and it took some time to figure out how I could make beats. I didn’t have access to a lot at the time but I would say late 2000s I was able to get online and learn how people made beats and from there it’s history.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I’m a producer. A Hip Hop Producer. I go by MidwestMyles and I can be found on virtually any digital playform out there. I make beats. I know the term producer can be a loose term sometimes, but in Hip Hop it generally means the one who makes the beats. One thing that I’ve been told even when I first started making music is that my sound is unique. I am able to make catchy yet different melodies and structure chords differently than others. Also I release music on my own platforms featuring rappers I respect and like and believe need more shine. I have a full length album filled with MCs. All these artists I have a lot of respect for. I’m going to continue to release singles until my my next full length album is ready.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes. I love Hip Hop culture and my main goal right now is to really allow artists to showcase themselves. I love crafting hip hop beats and hearing the final product every time. There’s nothing like creating a banger and hearing the final product. In the future I would love to work with larger artists. It’s just a matter of getting heard. I’ve been doing a pretty good job at that but there’s still plenty of work to be done. I have a track dropping July 25th with Horseshoe GANG aka Shoe Gang. They’re 3 lyrically inclined brothers from Long Beach along with some others. I also just dropped an EP with long time collaborator and friend BillZBondZ. I can be found on any streaming platform. Just search up MidwestMyles.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Back in the day, and I think it’s the same with a lot of musicians, I tried too hard to sound like the pack. And that’s not really a good way to approach music. If you sound different that can be a good thing. I was upset early on that I had a different sound. Most of my beats didn’t sound like other producers beats. I quickly realized that was MY sound. You know what I mean? MY SOUND. So pretty much do you. Don’t follow the pack all the time.
