We were lucky to catch up with Patrick Kenger recently and have shared our conversation below.
Patrick, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
When I was in college, I wanted to learn about style – not just what things looked good, but WHY they looked good. I went down the “rabbit hole” of books, courses, etc. and started writing and creating content around menswear as a hobby, but also as a way to distill the information down for myself and others in an understandable and usable way.
The more I learned, the more I discovered that there was a lot of advice out there that was pretty bad – largely from people self-identifying as experts who would blindly dictate arbitrary style “rules” that people should follow without having a clue about the fundamentals that make it all work. I wanted to create content that would establish a solid understanding of those fundamentals and then break them down in a digestible way so that any guy could understand that same “why” that I’d been searching for myself.
After a while, friends started to ask for style advice or invite me to go shopping with them. They wanted to know what looked good, what was appropriate for a date, what brands would work best – everything I’d been delving into. The more I helped them, the more I realized how much I enjoyed doing it, and I started to think about what it would be like to do it as a business. From there, I furthered my style / education in a more formal way through studying with other stylists and earning certifications from top schools, officially started my business, and began to take on clients in a professional capacity.
That was over a decade ago, and since then PIVOT has become one of the top men’s styling services in the US. I’ve developed a business model and a support team that I’m very proud of, and we’ve been privileged to work 1-on-1 with over a thousand great guys nationwide to help them transform their wardrobe and personal style. I’ve also been invited to contribute style advice to national news outlets like CNN, NBC, Wall Street Journal, and others.
Through it all, I’ve stuck to that initial goal that I had — to help guys help themselves when it comes to style. I’ve been lucky enough to build a successful business around that, and I’m grateful every day that I get to do work I genuinely love.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Pivot Image Consulting is a personal style service that works exclusively with men to elevate their wardrobe and personal style. We work 1-on-1 with men all around the country (and sometimes internationally) both virtually and in person to help update and expand their wardrobe and learn the style fundamentals that determine what will look best on them. Each client leaves his program with a personalized, curated shopping list as well as hours of education and face-to-face consultation work that equip him to make smart, savvy style choices for years to come.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
For me, quality is the name of the game, whether it’s white-glove customer service, top-notch education and resources, or the hardware on a pair of pants. At PIVOT we aim to bring exceptional value to our clients from every angle, and in a world full of fast fashion and chatbots, people notice that difference in quality and want to share their experience with others. I’m proud to say that we have a consistent five-star rating on Google and frequent feedback from clients that our programs and support have exceeded their expectations, which all goes back to that core principle: quality.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
In addition to personal referrals from past clients, PIVOT has developed a strong digital presence online over the years, which is bolstered by a combination of carefully designed lead magnets, contributions to major news outlets like CNN and The Wall Street Journal, our own blog and social media, etc. We offer a complimentary Style Strategy Call to those who meet certain baseline criteria, which allows us to get to know potential clients in a low-pressure environment to help determine if we’re a good fit for them (and vice versa).
