We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Patrick Gremillion a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Patrick, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea behind, The Patty-G Show, was born out of a need to promote my own city. While I attended LSU, a majority of my classmates kept telling me they wanted to leave Baton Rouge and go to another big city in order to, “make it”. While I knew there was tremendous opportunity within our own city, they felt otherwise. While reflecting on this idea that Louisiana has so much to offer, I noticed there was a gap in the content created around this idea. I knew of business owners doing great things in the community, but not everyone else did. Podcasting at the time was just getting started and people were becoming more and more aware of how they worked. After doing several months of research and development into how to create a podcast, I knew it was time for me to take action. Deciding to take matters into my own hands, I chose a podcast hosting platform and recorded my very first episode on an iPhone 8. While the first episode was just me, I have since interviewed over 200 business owners and entrepreneurs alike in our community. This was a worthwhile endeavor for me to take on because I’m a member of this community and I want to see it thrive and excel to the next level. I wasn’t sure this would work, but I knew it had to be done and that pushed me to take the first leap. My unique approach was simple, casual conversations with no real time limit for the guests. We are able to talk about any and all topics that the guest chooses. We can cook, drink, and do whatever we like since the format is so free flowing. I’m genuinely excited to sit in the chair each and every week to hear a new story from an amazing local entrepreneur.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Both of my industries speak to both sides of my brain. My CPA world allows me to be analytical and numbers driven, while being a podcast host allows me to be creative. I decided to go into accounting and become a CPA because I knew that every entrepreneur would have to know their numbers in order to become successful. Being able to provide a level of service that allows entrepreneurs to be successful and continue to scale is something I truly enjoy. Starting the podcast journey with The Patty-G Show has been something I’ve truly enjoyed as well. I get the honor of talking with absolutely amazing people in the business community and help them share their stories through a conversation. Developing my interview skills has been a constant push to become a better version of myself and the best way I’ve done that is through putting in the hours of interviews and talking to a diverse group of people.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
What we do every year for the podcast is a guest party. I invite each past guest to come for an evening of fun and festivities where we can all network and get to know one another deeper. While some of the guests I’ve known before they sat down in the chair, others I am meeting for the very first time when we record the episode. Having an annual party each year gives me the chance to reconnect and further that business relationship. It has quickly turned into a night of excellent networking as people are in the room they wouldn’t have the chance to be in if it wasn’t for the show. Being true to our word of connecting folks and bringing the stories to life is one of the main reasons we are able to put on such an incredible event. We are able to foster that brand loyalty by constantly promoting others and keeping them at the center of attention.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
During the course of scheduling our guests, they are often booked several months in advance. We’ve had, on occasion, guests either cancel at the last minute or completely ghost us and become no shows. While this can be disheartening, it taught me a valuable lesson to keep pushing forward. Each guest we sit down with for The Patty-G Show we like to focus on them at that point in time and where they’ve come from to get there. We don’t have guests we hold above others. This allows each show to be new and exciting and continue through to the next guest. We have had multiple times where guests have told us no and caused us to pivot and rethink who we should invite on next. Another side of the show is sponsors, we initially struggled to get sponsors on the show because we were a no name brand. Through years of putting in the hours and weeks on end to grow the show and release absolutely wonderful content, we signed our first sponsor. Through roughly hundreds of emails to tens of businesses, we’ve been able to establish a strong base of sponsors that help contribute to make the show a possibility. After getting told multiple times that podcasting is not a way to promote businesses, we’ve been able to prove time and time again just how effective marketing with the show can be through tangible results and actual people supporting the businesses.
