We recently connected with Patrick Goss and have shared our conversation below.
Patrick, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
Something that is unexpected about pursuing a career making music is how much non music related activities go into building yourself a viable career. Like any other creative profession you get into it because of the love of the craft and the personal need to create. I thought that my passion and love for music production would be enough to build a career off of i.e. make a lot of music -> get better -> once my music is good enough I will start to build a following naturally and find success. This is sadly not the case. I now realize that a passion for the craft and a great product is the bare minimum of what you need to find success, that is the barrier of entry. Once you have a great creative product you must then turn into an entrepreneur and content creator. Having a consistent social media presence might be the most important thing to growing a creative career. Your ability to market yourself, network with others in the industry, and create high quality entertaining content to engage the audience of your industry is now what is necessary to have a career in a creative field, it is no longer just about the music
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is PatFromLastYear and I make electronic music. Music has always played a large role in my life whether it was playing Guitar Hero, getting pumped up for a sporting event during my adolescents or comforting me during a hard time. I was very into the alt. rock and Pop Punk scenes growing up in the 2000’s and the emotional impact of that music was always present in my life. In 2019 I started creating music and instantly fell in love with the creative process of electronic production. I am heavily inspired by artists like ILLENIUM and Said The Sky but to stand apart from their already established sounds I started to include more rock and pop punk influence into my music. Since the emotional feel of both genres is the same the two sounds work well together and that is how I established my current sound.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is seeing the response when I release a new song. To know that something I put a part of myself into creates an emotional response and enjoyment in others is always the greatest thing about creating.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew how helpful artist discord communities could be. There are whole communities of smaller artists and creators helping each other out online, these places are a hub for knowledge and collaborative support. If you are a new creative and are lookin got level up your skills or network then these discord communities are the first place you should go!
