Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Patrick Antonian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Patrick, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
In general, people tend to mischaracterize rappers and even more so misunderstand. Part of being an artist is to be able to capture different emotions. Each song, each verse, each chorus, even each line has its own story to tell. People will build an idea of who they think you are without ever having met you. Many times I’ve met people, whether they be fans, potential future friends, possible collaboration professionals, or even a potential love interests who think they know you based on the music they have heard. Each song is a different facet of the artist. For example if some one makes angry music does not necessarily mean they are an angry person all the time. Yes, the music is an expression of who the artist is, but it does not encompass the entire being. We should ride each wave openly as we receive it.
Patrick, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was naturally into music from a young age. I eventually started making my own music and pushed my way into the industry. Not in a forceful way but just by finding like minded individuals that where already in the industry and gracious enough to help me carve my own lane. Definitely what sets me apart is that my motives have nothing to do with fame, money, status, etc… Some of those things come and I accept them gracefully, but the main motivation is the music itself. It’s always the main focus so it will never be tainted by the temptation of gaining superficial things. When you keep it pure the success will come and it’s better than any ill gotten favorable outcome. One of my proudest moments is being able to release a single with Ghostface Killah from Wu-tang. He has always been one of my top favorites. The song is called “What Real Thugs Talk About.” Make sure to check that out! My music combines the west-coast vibe with strong influence I had from the east-coast sound. Really makes for an innovative sound and style of rap. I like to call it Los Angeles grimy rap. Super in the pocket, with depth, & richness.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Calculation! Calculation is a big lesson I had to unlearn. The more calculated something is, the more it loses its authenticity. In my early career I over calculated a single release once. Calculating every note, word, and artwork for the release. It’s best to let go and let the vibe lead you. You’ll get to place you never expected to reach.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect would have to be the expression. All my emotions can translate to music which lets my being and soul be free to experience new things with less baggage.
