We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Patricia Sheppard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Patricia , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
I have always been an observant person. I wish I could pinpoint a moment that I wanted to do this for the rest of my life, but truthfully it was simply a part of me. I took photography in College but did not fully understand what I wanted to do with it. So with this, I pursued Teaching primarily, but photography was always in my heart. When I met my partner, another artist, I thought my passion for photography was ignited. Together I feel we feed off of each other creatively.
So to answer the question of what success is, I say it’s courage, failure, and perseverance. If I placed so much pressure on getting it right. Having a moment. Figuring it out all at once. I wouldn’t be doing what I am now. The road to success. Whatever that means to oneself will never be easy, but reaching that goal feels sweeter with a little bit of resistance.
Patricia , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am from Oklahoma and I am of Indigenous and Irish descent. I studied photography at Oklahoma State Okmulgee. My preferred style of photography is black and white and architecture. My favorite photographer is Ansel Adams. I love how he controls exposure through burning and dodging in his prints. It adds depth and makes the subject more interesting, like in Bridalveil Fall.
When my fiancé and I met. We combined my love of photography with her love of painting; thus, Wicked Dual was born. We provide museum-quality prints and original artwork. Our style is edgy with a twist of goth.
Our favorite holiday is Halloween.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
3. We met officially on social media, but we crossed pass many times in the last 10 years through work. We had our first date at the Detour at the Domain. While waiting for an order of wings that never came, we discovered we had a common interest in art. This started our partnership in business and in life. Thankfully the wings never came…;)
How did you build your audience on social media?
When we started with social media, it was all about a nice picture and a nice caption. Over time we changed with the times, AKA the algorithm, and adapted to more videos and more in touch with our audience, but in the end, the keyword is consistency. It gets tiresome sometimes, but we feel that’s what we owe to our audience and customers.
