We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Patricia “Patty” Moya a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Patricia “Patty”, thanks for joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss, mentor or leader leading you? Can you us a story or anecdote that helps illustrate why this person was such a great leader and the impact they had on you or their team?

Under the tutelage of Dr. German Newall, I’ve not only honed my skills as a coordinator but have blossomed into a trusted advocate for our patients’ aspirations.
Patricia “Patty”, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Over 25 years ago, I embarked on a career journey as a medical assistant in the field of plastic surgery with ACPS the Best Group in Houston, Texas. Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
In the dynamic realm of plastic surgery, where every procedure holds the promise of transformation, the role of a patient coordinator transcends mere logistical coordination. It becomes a delicate dance of empathy, compassion, and attentive listening, essential elements that are pivotal to the patient experience.
At the heart of patient coordination lies the profound understanding that every patient carries a unique story, often intertwined with vulnerabilities and insecurities. It is a journey marked by courage, as individuals bravely unveil the areas of their bodies that cause discomfort and seek guidance towards achieving their aesthetic goals.
As a patient coordinator, the ability to listen attentively extends far beyond hearing words; it involves tuning in to the unspoken nuances, the underlying emotions, and the unarticulated fears that lie beneath the surface. It requires creating a safe space where patients feel heard, validated, and understood.
Empathy emerges as the cornerstone of effective patient coordination, allowing coordinators to connect with patients on a deeper level and foster a sense of trust and rapport. By stepping into the shoes of the patient, coordinators can navigate the journey alongside them, offering support, reassurance, and guidance every step of the way.
Compassion acts as the guiding force that drives patient coordinators to go above and beyond in catering to the individual needs of each patient. It entails not only addressing the physical aspects of the procedure but also tending to the emotional well-being of patients, acknowledging their fears, and providing comfort and reassurance.
Moreover, recognizing the vulnerability inherent in the process, patient coordinators play a pivotal role in creating a supportive and non-judgmental environment. They understand the courage it takes for patients to share their concerns and insecurities, and they strive to cultivate an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding.
In essence, the importance of empathy and compassion in patient coordination cannot be overstated. It is the foundation upon which trust is built, relationships are forged, and meaningful journeys towards self-confidence and empowerment are embarked upon. By listening attentively, empathizing deeply, and approaching each interaction with genuine compassion, patient coordinators become instrumental in facilitating positive and transformative experiences for their patients. After all, behind every patient is a unique story waiting to be heard, understood, and embraced with empathy and compassion.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
To see the smiles on their faces as they look in the mirror and see their dreams become a reality is a feeling like no other. It reaffirms my commitment to this field and reminds me of the profound impact that compassionate care and skilled expertise can have on the lives of others.
