We recently connected with Patricia Medina and have shared our conversation below.
Patricia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
Yes, I take vacations as often as possible. It is very important for my mental health to disconnect from time to time. It gives me the opportunity to see things from a new perspective, it recharges me as a creator specially when I visit places surrounded by nature.
Patricia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Ever since I can remember I was drawn to fashion, my mom taught me how to sew by hand when I was 6 years old, the first piece of clothing I made was a white coat for my Barbie. I was the child who was always inside her room drawing collections and painting. Same thing at school. I always knew I wanted to become a Fashion Designer so when I was 17 I moved from Venezuela to Italy and then to France to study Fashion, I stayed there for a year and a half and not knowing what specifically I wanted to do in Fashion I went back home and got a degree in Architecture which helps me to this day to see the structure in absolutely everything. After that I moved to Spain and got a Master’s Degree on Design, Fashion and Marketing, decided to make my thesis on bridal because it caught my attention how many brides in my country of origin wear party dresses instead of a wedding dress for their civil ceremony so I made a collection on dresses specially made for this event. Later on I moved back to Venezuela and had a boutique, learned a lot about management and when I decided to close it I turned to Instagram and realized how my main sells were on accessories so I continue doing solely that and it was then when my business grew even more, my pieces were on magazines and TV shows. Finally I moved to Houston on 2019 and brought my business with me, expanded to bridesmaids and luxury day to day pieces and still love being able to do this. The creative portion of it is my favorite part, I really enjoy doing researches about things that inspire me, it can be a picture, a poem, a song, I always go back in time, read about the history of that thing that has inspired me and also analyze the trends until something makes click and I am able to imagine an entire collection right away. My clients come to me looking for one of a kind piece to wear for their big day, mostly their wedding. I offer pieces made by hand from scratch, I show my client the whole creative process and serve as a consultant so I can help them not only in choosing the right accessory but recommending anything else I think they may need. This journey in Fashion started decades ago when I made that coat for my doll, I still see myself doing this for the rest of my life, the funny thing about having a passion is that no matter what you have to go after it so you can see how magic unfolds when you do what makes you happy and full.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Moving by myself to America has been one of the biggest challenges of my life, I took jobs I dislike in order to support me and my dreams. At the end of the day you have to believe in yourself, have faith in you and your capabilities and be your own amazing cheerleader. Also allow yourself to be human, and understand that even if today you are not where you wanna be that does not mean you are gonna be there forever and that moment when you feel down does not define you. You are the one who makes the decision to move towards your goal. Magic does not happen in comfort zones.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
My clients just love how intricate and consistent the quality of my product is. I only sell pieces that make me proud; more than once I have started again an order because I was not totally happy with the final result. Doesn’t matter how long it takes I try my best to offer them something that will put a smile on their faces once they receive it.
