We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Patrice Monteiro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Patrice , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My collectors have been among the most extraordinary individuals I’ve met. Actress Milauna Jemai and musician Jeff Driskill, alongside his wife Nonnahs Driskill, were some of the first outside my family to affirm that my artistic expression resonated with those who appreciate distinctive artistry. Then came loyal patrons like Los Angeles business owners Tee and Havona Alves—whose support kept me consistently engaged, shaping a mentor relationship that taught me invaluable lessons in demand, entrepreneurship, and customer service.
Every one of these experiences encouraged me to share my work beyond my own healing, fostering opportunities and deeper connections with those who continue to enrich my life in ways far beyond artistic collaboration.

Patrice , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a contemporary fiber artist based in Long Beach, CA, specializing in paper quilling and textiles. Through meticulously crafted portraits and mosaics, I’ve elevated the traditional art of quilling, transforming delicate paper strips into intricate, dimensional masterpieces. My process involves cutting, rolling, pinching, shaping, and strategically manipulating coils to create compelling visual narratives.
Originally a jewelry stylist, I discovered quilling in 2013 as a therapeutic practice following postpartum. This creative outlet soon evolved into a defining artistic pursuit, leading to my first solo exhibition in 2018. By seamlessly merging my expertise in design with my lifelong passion for art and bold color compositions, I’ve cultivated a distinctive aesthetic that celebrates depth and vibrancy. My evolution into 3D portraiture and mixed media quilling further expanded the scope of my artistic expression.
A passionate advocate for mental health and wellness through art therapy, I find deep inspiration in my musical, artistic spouse and three children. My work is driven by a desire to uplift, inspire, and evoke hope through visually compelling storytelling.
In 2013, I founded GABA Girl—an acronym for “Girls Are Beautiful Always”—as a form of self-encouragement after the birth of my first son. Initially established as a lifestyle brand encompassing fashion, art, and music, GABA Girl evolved over time, refining its focus to emphasize art and culture as a medium for empowerment and creative exploration.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
For years, I found myself shifting between versions of who I thought I should be, shaped by a constant awareness of how I was perceived. That hyperfocus on external validation led me to suppress parts of myself out of fear of rejection. It took significant growth to break free from those limitations and embrace the truth that authenticity is never wrong.
GABA Girl was born as a celebration of the timeless feminine power within every woman—regardless of age, background, ethnicity, or identity. What started as the mantra “Girls Are Beautiful Always” has evolved into powerful affirmations: “Go and be amazing!” “Go and be audacious!” “Go and be awesome!”—each echoing the spirit of Carpe Diem. The message is clear: seize every opportunity, push past fear and doubt, and step boldly into your moment.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most fulfilling part of being an artist is the sense of community—especially among those who champion inclusion and collaboration. There’s something remarkable about how artists share their work, receiving appreciation from people who, under ordinary circumstances, might never have crossed paths. Yet, through social networks, we create profound connections.
Having my art recognized by creatives who push me to embrace originality and trust the process is an incredible gift. The ability to reshape our environment—both physically and emotionally—through expressions of love, vibrant color, universal sorrow, time, introspection, stillness, and light is a rare and beautiful privilege.
