We were lucky to catch up with Pat Haug recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Pat, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Our existing business was traditional craftsmanship and a commitment to providing our customers with quality custom metal signs. We had a eureka moment when we first saw a vertical wall printer, a blend of modern technology and art. We created the “Wall Possible” product. This is more than just a tool; it is a bridge to future growth, and a unique service and product for new and existing customers.
In our area, no one is offering vertical wall printing technology.
Vertical printing allows us to incorporate metal with this new printing method to create uniquely designed signs in addition to our traditional fabrication. But more than that, this provides a whole new market, expanding to the wall graphics industry. We provide unique designs printed directly onto walls, all while using eco-friendly materials and processes. It’s a better product in the wall graphics industry with no waste, low VOC inks, quick installs, innovative designs and just really cool to watch!
In every step, we ensure our business aligns with our core values of community, customers and sustainability. This venture is more than just a new product offering. It is a leap into the future of art and technology in a sustainable format.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a mechanical engineer by training, and a tech-lover and creator at heart. My journey into the world of technology blended with creativity began with my degree in mechanical engineering. Over the years, I’ve ventured into various realms where technology meets art – from building custom machines to running a fused glass teaching studio, delving into metal fabrication, website development, and now, pioneering in vertical wall printing for unique wall graphics. My approach has always been about harmonizing the technical with the creative. I believe these skills are not opposites, but complementary forces that, when united, lead to truly innovative products and solutions.
In my current endeavor with vertical wall printing (WallPossible), we’re not just offering a service; we’re providing an experience and a product that’s as unique as our clients’ visions. Our work ranges from intricate wall graphics for businesses wanting to make a bold statement, to personalized designs for homeowners seeking to transform their spaces. The versatility of our printing technology allows us to cater to a wide range of clients, each with their unique aesthetic and functional needs.
What truly sets us apart is our commitment to a holistic solution. Every project we take on is an opportunity to meld functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. We create visually stunning pieces and we ensure that each creation aligns with our high standards of sustainability. Vertical printing solves many of the problems of traditional wall vinyls, stickers and decals. We are the only company in our area that even has this technology.
I am proud of our foresight in recognizing solutions to problems in the industry and how our company implements the solutions before anyone else. We’ve shown that it’s possible to create stunning, high-quality products without compromising on environmental values. We blend innovation, creativity, quality, and sustainability.
For potential clients and enthusiasts of the latest technology, I want them to know that when they choose us, they are getting creative solutions to their needs in the most sustainable manner. Our journey is an ongoing one, and we are excited to see where this blend of technology and creativity takes us next, always keeping our clients’ visions and the well-being of our environment at the heart of what we do.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The year 2020, as for many, marked a significant turning point for me both personally and professionally. At that time, I owned a fused glass teaching studio, and concurrently, my son faced a career challenge due to being laid off from his welding job. This period of uncertainty, however, opened the door to an unexpected opportunity for our family. Drawing on our collective skills, my family decided to start a new business. My engineer husband, my son, and I came together to launch “SirMetalman”. Starting with fabricating small items, we embarked on this new entrepreneurial journey with a blend of hope and determination.
It wasn’t long before we identified a gap in the market. By listening to our customers and understanding their needs, we realized the potential in custom metal signs for businesses. This insight led us to pivot our focus, honing in on this niche area. This shift wasn’t just about changing direction; it was about evolving with the market, growing as a business, and continually seeking opportunities to meet unfulfilled needs.
More recently, we took another significant step by integrating a vertical wall printer into our services with “WallPossible”. This addition wasn’t just a new service offering; it represented our commitment to continuous learning and adaptation. We are not just embracing new technology; we are exploring how best to integrate it into our existing operations while maintaining the high-quality products our customers expect.
To me, this journey of pivoting, or evolving, is not just a business strategy; it’s a personal philosophy. It underscores the importance of being adaptable, of being a lifelong learner, and of recognizing opportunities for growth. In business and life, the ability to pivot is essential. It’s about staying dynamic, responsive to change, and open to new possibilities. As we continue to explore and integrate new technologies and ideas, we remain committed to providing the best solutions and products to our customers, ensuring that our journey of growth and learning never ceases.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
In my entrepreneurial journey, the resources I’ve engaged with have played a crucial role in shaping my management philosophy and business approach. I am an avid reader and podcast listener. I firmly believe that, just as we are mindful of what we feed our bodies, we must be equally vigilant about what we feed our minds.
My interests span across learning from the experiences of business founders, to practical life skills such as morning routines, habit management, and staying abreast of the latest technological advancements. These varied interests help me maintain a balanced and holistic approach to both personal development and business management.
Among the plethora of great content available, there are a few podcasts and books that have particularly resonated with me. “Founders” by David Senra is an exceptional podcast that delves into the minds of groundbreaking entrepreneurs, offering invaluable insights into their thought processes and journeys. Similarly, “Business Wars” by Wondery, hosted by David Brown, provides an intriguing look into the competitive dynamics between leading companies, offering lessons in strategy and leadership.
When it comes to books, “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand has been a significant influence, providing a unique perspective on individualism and entrepreneurial spirit. “The 5am Club” by Robin Sharma has been instrumental in shaping my thoughts on productivity and the power of morning routines. “Illusions” by Richard Bach, though not a traditional business book, has offered profound insights into the nature of reality and the power of belief, which are surprisingly applicable in the business world.
These resources have been more than just sources of information; they have been guides in my journey of continuous learning and growth. They remind me that the journey of an entrepreneur is as much about personal development as it is about business acumen.
