Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Pastors Devin & Samantha Westbrook . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Pastors Devin & Samantha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Risk-taking is a huge part of most people’s stories, but too often, society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory?
There are times in life you need to take the risk and bet on yourself. The greater the risks, the greater the reward. We’ve been married 15 + years, and getting married was the first of many risks. We didn’t have all of our i’s dotted or t’s crossed, but we were sure that our destiny was connected.
Throughout the years, we’ve accomplished so much. We hosted a Creative Arts Camp (KASACE) for 14 years, planted the most dope & doctrinal church in our region (Redemption Church), founded Marriage Maintenance, where we use our mistakes to help other marriages work, and most recently wrote a book together, “Marriage Maintenance A Guide to Fine-Tuning Your Marriage” and we discuss everything from the bedroom to the bank account.
Often what first tries to crush you is what you’re called to. We’re called to be preachers, pastors, purpose pushers, not just entrepreneurs but knowledgepreneurs.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
We believe that you don’t have to be this or that you can be this AND that. Our mandate includes helping people/being problem solvers in various ways.
Pastor Devin Westbrook Sr. is a church planter, professor at Visible Music College, an educator in the school district, and curator of “The Art of Preaching” Masterclass. Together they are the certified success coaches of “Marriage Maintenace,” their unique version of counseling, and Westbrook Media & Publishing Company operators.
We’re too old for false humility, so when you got it, you just got it. The Westbrooks got it. We’re real, relevant, transparent, authentic, honest, heartfelt, and spirit-filled, and we desire to help everyone assigned to us get to a place called destiny. We have the oil for marriage, the oil for ministry, and the oil for the marketplace.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
As a business owner, always remember to deliver what you promise. When you can’t, own it. People connect with people before they connect with a product. To grow your clientele be genuine, don’t chase the paper chase purpose. Offer your clients value consistently.
Anything healthy will grow. Commit to being healthy and not money hungry.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
You’re only as strong as the weakest person on your team. When building or managing a team, be sure they have the High C’s: Competence, Character, and Chemistry. If firing them crosses your mind go ahead and do it. Don’t pay people or keep people around you know don’t fit. When they’re not a good fit, they will cause chaos to the culture.
At the same time, be a leader who cares about people beyond their gifts and contribution. Discover their love language and be intentional about speaking to that. Be okay with training, equipping, and pushing your “Rockstars” to pursue things that don’t involve you. Great leaders produce other great leaders.
We’re blessed to have our children on our team, Devin Jr. (Darriel), Miyah, Kayla, Christion, and David. They’re all uniquely gifted. Our 14-year young son is currently running his t-shirt business, #TargetYourTalk. He is committed to “Let Your Tee do the Talking.” He uses positive things we say to allow shirts to speak. This says to us that we have made an impact.
As a business owner, creative, or leader, make sure you are impactful.
