We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Parker Bridges. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Parker below.
Parker, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us a bit about who your hero is and the influence they’ve had on you?
My mother, is my hero. I think despite everything that has gone on in her life she is still standing here loving people and trying to make the world a bit better everyday. The biggest thing I learned from watching her is adopting a spirit of resilience. She won’t let herself stay down for too long, every morning she is still up at the crack of dawn and starting her work. We lost our home in North Carolina due to issues with trusting the wrong people in the renovation process. It hit her hard. Honestly, watching it break her down, crushed me. Not her, though. Not even a week later she had here eyes set on next steps, tackling the next project. It taught me to lean into life instead of away from it when the hits come. Take time to process what happened and get up and move forward, nothing good comes from stagnating.
Parker, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Well, I’m a director and writer. I started out as a painter in North Carolina, I don’t feel I every really blossomed with it but it’s remained something I love to do. I transitioned from that to making comics for some indie publications. I made the move into animation shortly thereafter, and this path wound its way into filmmaking.
I am focused on working with independent filmmakers and small to midsize companies. We tailor make every project to fit the needs of individuals with the time to work on crafting a specific vision. We offer pre and post-production filming services, from concept to screen. We work with businesses and brands to create visuals that represent their brand succinctly. We often take the understated approach, where the story makes the difference. We don’t differentiate between a dentist’s office or a production house, we offer the same care in all that we do. I will be honest I think that’s what I’m the most proud of as well, our care and attention.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In the beginning, at least in this industry, where I want to make films, I had to work for “free”, going against some ‘knowledgeable’ folks in my circle who would have me only take work where the money is up front. In truth, this work was essential to my growth as a Cinematographer and as a business owner. I got to use lights I couldn’t afford at the time and got to work on larger sets quickly. That all trickled back into my work with brands where I noticed my set ups became radically more dynamic. I think the issue comes when we don’t understand when a third party is taking advantage of what we have to offer and is instead partnering with us where we are at. Starting from the bottom of the barrel and being given a chance to light a movie was a huge step up from lighting things in my bedroom. If the free work enhances the work flow and gives you the meat and potatoes of a portfolio, use that. Take all of that knowledge and experience and snowball it into the next thing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting to wake up everyday and make something new is such an incredible thing. I get to wake up and try to add something to the world. In 400 years, nothing I do or did will matter, but I left something for people here today and tomorrow, I think that’s beautiful. The most rewarding aspect for me is that I get to dream of something and create it. I get to watch a concept go from a thought to a script to a living breathing thing in film. It’s such a special process of trusting so many people with a vision that you cultivated for a long time, alone in my case. Watching what I write and shoot have an effect on people is such a special thing. There’s not much that can replace that feeling for me.
