We were lucky to catch up with Paris Cox-farr recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Paris, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents always signed me up for private guitar lessons from the age of seven. they never forced me to practice and i rarely did. but i continued to show up every week. they shared their personal favorite tracks with me from bands like: Radiohead, dandy warhols, the beatles, jimi hendrix, led zeppelin. on long sad car rides to the school i hated i would sing along with my mother and hope that things would turn out a little brighter in the future. My mom eventually took me out of school because i couldn’t cut it like the other kids. she saw i was miserable and thought that theres gotta be some other way to live than to keep pushing my kid thru hell. ill be forever thankful for the decisions my parents made during my upbringing. at night and at family affairs we would often host long drawn out increasingly drunken sing along sessions with old folk songs, rock ballads and pop hits. my uncle john would always play guitar at one point i surpassed him in being able to write and play guitar way better. one of my greatest achievements. my parents exposed me to music in a healthy way with no pressure but constant attention and thought. they showed that they cared and that naturally made me care.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Conceived in the waters of Arroyo Seco, forged in the Bay Area DIY scene, Lofi Legs is an SF-based rock band/moniker created by Paris Cox-Farr. writing songs about falling in love, dropping acid, and buying horses. Starry-eyed love ballads share space with rampaging party songs.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before I wrote songs seriously i was in school for filmmaking. I was obsessed with cameras and photography and my main skill was cinematography. I shot a bunch of student films and even had one of the films i worked on get a golden eagle.(highest award for a student film) Anyhow, in the summer of 2015 or 2014 its a bit blurry. i was camping with my then girlfriend and former drummer Maria Donjacour. We decided we were to take acid for the first time together before she went off to college. earlier in the day we had broken the rear windshield, not a good sign. so we tripped. two tabs each. eventually we were back inside of our tent and trying to sleep. she said i stopped breathing so i was quickly woken up by a slap in the face. i’m pretty sure youre like never supposed to hit someone tripping. so i left the tent shocked terrifed i forgot who i was where i was, everything. so i ran and i ran as far as i could. eventually i became so tired of looking at the world i decided it was an okay idea to run with my eyes closed. so i did i which point i promptly fell down a cliff losing two teeth, splitting my lip open and scraping skin off of most of the front of my body. Maria found me the next morning dried blood covering my face delirious. i was airlifted to Fresno at which point i can remember my dads voice as they sowed my upper lip back together. since then i’ve played music written songs, put out two going three records, three eps, and played sxsw in Austin Texas! never looked back , not even once.
