My creative spark started on the spoken-word circuit—incense and finger snaps. clove cigarettes, and bad poetry about “the man”, “the lover to be,” or “a funny thing that happened that week”, I was chopping it up backstage with a fellow when he dropped these jewels on me:
“I’m going to become a copywriter.”
Light-bulb moment: “Wait—people actually get paid to write and be creative?”
The very next day, I blitzed every agency in Chicago—jaw on the floor at how many doors I never knew existed. Finding your path is like following a yellow-brick road: even the gold bricks have cracks, chips, and potholes bigger than the industry giants who paved the way.
But here’s what hooked me: that rush of turning a blank page into a gut-punch. Advertising turned out to be the ultimate creative playground:
Poetry helped define flow; now I drop manifestos, punchlines, and brand anthems with the same beat.
Spoken word lives on vulnerability. In ads, I still build that bridge straight to the heart.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I started my professional career as an accountant. I was an inventory analyst for Scott-Foresman Addison-Wesley. This is my backup plan. So far, it is working out.
