We recently connected with Paranormal Putas and have shared our conversation below.
Paranormal Putas, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
We grew up in east Austin, which may not mean a lot to people not from Austin. In 1928 the “Master Plan” was put into place which created a distinct racial divide. The people living on the east side of IH-35 were all people of color and of low income.
Now in 2022, we are seeing our neighborhoods being gentrified at an alarming rate. Our little way of preserving some of the history and culture of east Austin is to document people’s paranormal experiences of the area, and that is what really drives the heart of our show. What we have learned and want to delve into are the stories that explore our spirituality, love, and culture. These are the topics that are most meaningful to us.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are two hermanas (sisters) and fourth generation Mexican-Americans. We grew up listening to our father and his brothers tell us terrifying campfire stories which planted the seed of curiosity of the paranormal within us. As young adults we had our own paranormal experiences. As adults we decided we wanted to share out those experiences and give others a platform to talk about their paranormal encounters as well . We are Leah and Bethany, the Paranormal Putas!
Something we have that not a lot of others do is each other. We are sisters but also best friends. We have a connection that runs deep. Because we are family we are aligned in many ways from our humor to the goals that we set.
We are proud of the product we put out because we are two young women with full time jobs that demand over 40 hours a week and yet we still produce the show and have done so for two years. Producing a podcast is a lot of work. it is basically a full time job in itself from recording, to marketing and editing we do it all.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
We want to create a space for people to discuss their paranormal experiences which can be difficult. Some people won’t believe you or think you are crazy when you talk about ghosts and aliens. So some people don’t get that outlet and it’s cool to provide one. We are women in taking space in a subject/field that is largely male-dominated. We think people are ready to see more BIPOC women in this community and we are excited to be a part of that change.
We are women, Mexican, plus size, and nerds! We are part of marginalized communities and live in a system that oppresses people like us. It can be hard to be taken seriously or heard at all simply for being who we are. That is exactly why we stress who we are. We are proud to be from the Eastside and proud to be Mexican women. We want to share our stories and experiences and help raise the voices of those in our community and that is what what really drives the heart of our show.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of doing what we do is getting to connect with people from all over the country and the world. Our show has reached listeners all over the globe and that type of response is something we never expected. To know that people we may never meet find joy, entertainment and connection in what we create means the world to us.
