We were lucky to catch up with Pamela Peterson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Pamela, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

My business is started from a Word God released to me to make something with my hands and name it Honey. My first name Pamela means ‘honey and all sweetness’. I prayed about direction and was led to conduct research on candle making. I joined various Facebook groups to learn and see if this was a profitable and attainable business. I have always loved using candles and other pleasant scents in my home. I researched and tested products for months before launching my business on February 5, 2022. It took 4 months to perfect three recipes. Candle making is not for the weak and it is a science to it. One must ensure that you have the right wick, container , wax and % of fragrance oil. It is way more than just pouring wax and fragrance into a vessel. I wanted to ensure that my products were safe and that you could actually smell them from the first light until the end. The name Honey Flow Scents is a combination of my name and my daughter’s. Her name is Jordyn which means descending downflowing, humility. I have tried a few other businesses prior to this one, but I have found that candle making is both therapeutic and enjoyable. It is a joy to see your finished product and smell the sweet aroma throughout the house.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

As I stated before, my business started from a Word from God and I moved in obedience and faith in starting the business. I grew up in poverty and have been seeking entrepreneur opportunities for the last several years trying to find my niche. I believe in having multiple streams of income and also desire to have a business once I retire from my federal job. I am the only member of my family with a business. I was not taught about having my own business nor as a child did believe it was something I could attain. As I matured in God, I began to believe that it was possible. In addition as a mother, I wanted to show my daughter that one idea could bring wealth. It takes faith, dedication and diligence. My products are handmade in small batches to ensure high quality. When the customers use my products, my prayer is that the sweet aroma brings a shift to an atmosphere of peace, relaxation and joy. I believe scents and music are two powerful agents that can invoke positive memories and experiences. I had a customer tell me as he smelled my candle Lemon Goodness that it reminded him so much of his Dad that had recently passed. He expressed to me that his Dad enjoyed eating lemon candy. The smile on his face as he shared the story was priceless. Honey Flow Scents provides handmade candles, wax melts, room sprays and car diffusers. These products can be used in your home, office and car.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?

The best source of new clients for me has been participating in various markets, festivals and pop-up events here in Nashville and surrounding cities. I meet so many wonderful business owners and new customers. Meeting customers and having face to face time also gives you a better idea of what is desired in the market. It is an opportunity to ask questions and get feedback on your products. I absolutely enjoy meeting new people and networking with other entrepreneurs.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

I think the most effective strategy for growing my clientele is social media. I had a customer take a picture of the products she purchased from Honey Flow Scents and post it on social media. This post resulted in me receiving multiple wholesale orders. Social media enables us to reach people beyond our normal reach. And is a powerful marketing tool.
