We were lucky to catch up with Pamela Davis recently and have shared our conversation below.
Pamela , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I am definitely happier as a business owner. Sometimes I think about what it would be like if I had a “regular” job. 9-5 desk job where I could leave the office and go home and not think about work again until the next day when I sat down at my desk. I would sleep more, I would be less stressed, but I would be WAY less fulfilled. I thrive on guest experience and standing out amongst the sea of caterers. I love providing a unique offering that will be talked about for years. I could never offer that at a “regular” job. I love the flexibility of running my own business. I get more time with my family and friends, and I can close up shop for weeks at a time in the off-season if I need to.

Pamela , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have over 23 years of bar and restaurant hospitality here in the Vail Valley. I was involved in a toxic business partnership when I became pregnant with my son and decided it was time for a break. Two years later, I was itching for a new start and created The Grazing Fox concept. At the time, this was not the way Americans wanted to eat but I was positive I could convince and thanks to Covid, it caught on like wildfire. I always knew I wanted to add a picnic aspect but I didn’t have the capacity to do so until June of 2021. Now, The Grazing Fox and Picnic Vail work seamlessly together providing creative and fun food and luxury outdoor picnics.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Honestly it all comes down to actually giving a shit. I take pride in my job and it shows. I thrive on the customer experience. We make food for funerals, births, anniversaries, weddings, etc and being able to help in some way is everything to us. I believe that that is the best way to grow and the best way to keep clients.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth. When you do a good job and your clients are happy, they will continue to share your name. In over 5 years in business, I have advertised once and that was mostly because I wanted to support my friend’s publication, not because I thought it would source new clients.
