We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Pam Covarrubias. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Pam below.
Hi Pam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
For a full year I was running two businesses, one was truly feeding my soul and the other one was taking bits and pieces of it. My own business coach advised me to close one business and I was scared. Do I have what it takes?
I had been making money building brands for a decade and I could make money doing that pretty easily. I had clients on waiting list and people were loving my work. On the other hand, my coaching business was slowly taking off but it wasn’t fully sustainable yet. I slowed down and realized running two businesses was preventing my coaching practice from growing.
My body was craving rest and spaciousness. I had to constantly switch from being a coach to being a creative director. I was at the verge of crashing. My brain wasn’t functioning as well because I was so drained from overextending myself to all my clients.
Finally I sent the announcement to my clients and those in waiting list. My branding agency was closing for good.
I could feel the fear in my bones. I had enough coaching clients to support me and I knew that with focus and determination I was going to succeed. I also knew that I needed to believe in myself before anyone else did. I had to listen to that little voice inside my body telling me I could. I had to quiet the doubtful voice inside my head telling me to go back to what I knew.
Most people were supportive, others questioned if I was making the right decision. The coaching industry is new yet highly populated. Some people advised to make sure I was different.
Instead, I chose to go inward. Instead I asked myself about what I already knew. Instead I went deep into my why.
I am the daughter of a single immigrant mom. My siblings and I grew up in a single mother’s income. I knew if my mom had received support from a coach, her business would’ve succeeded. I became the business coach my mom needed.
It was the time to get focused. I networked, I connected with likeminded business owners, I made sure everyone knew I had transitioned my work into coaching, and six months later I had a full coaching practice that supported me.
Sometimes we need to listen to that quiet voice inside pushing us to create change into our lives. That voice knows what we are capable of, and most importantly that voice knows our true why.
Now I serve first generation children of immigrants business owners like me. I guide and coach them through liberated business practices so they can fully embody who they are while they create sustainable businesses that support them and their families.
Pam, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I became a coach by accident. As a former brand strategist and creative director, I was often talking to business owners and I found myself asking a lot of questions. One of my core values is curiosity which led me to support my clients in many ways aside from branding. My business coach at the time invited me to explore coaching. I reluctantly began searching and exploring the industry and I fell in love with the work.
I learned from the top coaches and something didn’t feel quite right. I began unlearning a lot of business practices when I realized a lot of traditional business tactics are actually oppressive for People of The Global Majority, whom I serve.
So I embarked on the process of creating my own ways of doing business leaning on intersectional feminism, somatic practices through EFT/Tapping, and the teachings of mother earth. I created the liberated business method combining my brand strategy, marketing experience, and my 10+ year experience with EFT. I now support business owners through the liberation of oppressive business practices so they can create businesses that not only feel good, but do good.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think consistency is key to build a reputation with clients. Sometimes we have to constantly repeat and repeat what we do so it can finally sink into people. This is more important when we have built careers on something else and we pivot.
It’s been almost three years since I closed my branding agency and I still get requests from people looking to hire me for that work. This tells me I still need to share more about my current business as a coach even if it feels redundant to me.
We must remember people receive lots of information every day and in order to continue to build what I am known for I must continue to show up consistently with a clear message.
As an EFT Practitioner and Business Coach, I must continue to share my message and explain my work because my approach is different than what we typically expect from a coach.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
After I quit my corporate job, I got a part time job as a barista at the restaurant my friend managed. It was working great and I had the afternoons and weekends to work on my business. I was happy because I always had cash on hand from tips and I had time to develop my business when I was off. However, I got comfortable.
I noticed I wasn’t as diligent at networking and marketing until one day my friend called me to tell me the restaurant had closed that morning. Without warning and zero prior notice everyone was left without a job.
At that moment, I had to really buckle up and take aligned action into what I wanted my business to be. I had to take it more serious than ever because it was all I had.
I learned to believe in myself and my work. I learned to advocate for myself and my prices. I learned to bet on my work even when the easiest answer was to go back to corporate.
Radical change requires radical action. I began waking up earlier and going to bed earlier. I cut down on expenses. I started showing up everywhere I could. Because there wasn’t a plan B available. Plan A had to work.
And it worked. It’s been five years and I am now fully supported, I have created the business I want, I am serving amazing people. I look back at that moment when I got that phone call now and I feel grateful for the lesson and sudden shake up. It woke me up to show up for me.
