We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Paloma Tendero a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an artist is the ability to give form and shape to experiences and emotions that are just within oneself. It is the ability to question and answer what otherwise remains unseen or possibly unspoken. By creating art, you can translate something deeply personal into something universal, where others can connect and/or find meaning. There is also a sense of freedom in the creative process, there are always new materials to discover or new ways of making things, and it’s a very cathartic process. And then, of course, the moment when your work is exhibited and someone resonates with what you have created! Art has a unique power to address taboos, challenge societal norms, and open up conversations that, provokes and heals, and we don’t really have that in other contexts, so that’s why art is so rewarding and powerful.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve learned that resilience as an artist means accepting that rejection, financial instability, and constant challenges are simply part of the journey. No one prepares you for the unpredictable challenges that come with being a creative. For example, you have to do your own marketing, find permanent storage for your work, and relocate studios due to rent increases or building closures. In the past year, I’ve had to move studios three times, which has made it difficult to fully focus on the creative side of being an artist. But you have to adapt, keep pushing forward, and make it work in whatever way you can. At the end, what makes all the difference is having a strong community, other fellow artists who share the struggles, offer support and make the journey more enjoyable.
