We were lucky to catch up with Paige Padgett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Paige , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new firm – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
My first client outside of friends or family came as a referral from another agent. I helped her with an open house she was having. I stayed outside and let people in the gate of the condominium complex. She is a top producer, so I felt honored to be asked. When it came time to write offers, she remembered me. She referred a buyer that didn’t have an agent. My moto—say yes!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I pivoted to real estate while staying at home during Covid. I am a makeup artist and a leading clean beauty authority. I worked in production for nearly 20 years. The hours are brutal. As a single mom, I wanted to take my daughter to school in the mornings and make her dinner at night. I couldn’t do that in production. It seemed like the right time to make the change. I also applied to grad school. I am now an MBA candidate at Gies College of Business at University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.
The value I add for my clients comes from a skill I honed as a makeup artist—listening. Being a good listener and being able to translate and execute my clients wants and needs is my competitive advantage. Getting to know my client and their lifestyle helps me hone in on the intangibles and nuances of their life which helps me find the best fit.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Yes, I am the queen of pivots. In 2018 I had a promising start up. A clean makeup brand that was launching in a prestigious clean beauty boutique that had several stores already and ambitious plans to roll out stores across the US. They planned their fall launch around our products. The day our products hit the warehouse my partner put them on eBay, Groupon and Poshmark deteriorating our brand equity. Those platforms are great but not right for our lipsticks. It just wasn’t our brand. I left the company when I found out. Four days later Shark Tank called me. It was heart breaking. I pivoted back to production in 2019. Then in March of 2020 while working on a Disney show we shut down for Covid. During this time, I home schooled my daughter and pivoted to real estate. I’ve had to stay nimble and be resilient to navigate these unexpected events.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Keeping in touch with clients is one of the best ways to create loyalty. I call clients on their birthdays and holidays. I send cards and invite them out to lunch or other events. It’s easy for me because I am naturally social.
