We were lucky to catch up with Paige Carter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Paige, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
My first major risk was transitioning from a 9-5 job to becoming a freelance makeup artist. At the time, I had finally landed my dream job at MAC Cosmetics, a brand I had admired for years. MAC was the top name in the makeup industry, and being a MAC artist was a badge of honor. I had been trying to get in since 2012, and after multiple attempts, I was hired in 2015. Initially brought on as a freelancer, I was offered a permanent position within a week.
Working at MAC was a dream. I loved the artistry, especially how I got to work with clients from so many different backgrounds, which helped me hone my skills in skin tones and makeup application. However, despite my passion for the being at MAC, I wasn’t making enough money to sustain myself. I was struggling financially, and that’s when I realized it was time to take a leap of faith.
I prayed for guidance and took the risk of stepping away from the stability of a 9-5 job to pursue freelance makeup artistry full time. Ten years later, I’m proud to say that I’ve built a successful business. It hasn’t always been easy, but trusting my instincts and taking that leap has been one of the best decisions of my life.
Paige, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a proud Philadelphia native and a graduate of the Charter High School for Architecture & Design. After high school, I attended community college, thinking it was the right path, but eventually realized it wasn’t for me. I then enrolled at Empire Beauty School, where I graduated and began my journey as a professional makeup artist.
To build my name, I took part in various collaborations, and worked with top companies to hone my skills in customer service, inventory, and marketing. As the right opportunities came, I was fully prepared to pursue my passion for makeup artistry.
My job is demanding, but I love every minute of it. There’s nothing more rewarding than helping others feel great about themselves. Makeup artistry is deeply personal, and I’m proud to call it my craft. What sets me apart is my attention to detail and my commitment to exceptional customer service. For my clients, our time together goes beyond makeup—it’s a moment of connection, a chance for them to unwind and feel heard. It’s more than just a job for me; it’s a passion, and I’m grateful to be where I am.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building an audience on social media was no easy feat, but I documented every step of the way as I grew my business. From doing makeup out of my home to moving into my own studio, I captured it all. I even recorded my house calls and shared those moments with my followers. By sharing the behind-the-scenes journey, I was able to show people the full experience I provide. This transparency helped me connect with my audience, making them eager to book an appointment and sit in my chair. People would book appointments and had no where to go some just wanted to be Faced By Surperb. It’s been an incredible journey, and sharing it with others has made all the difference.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to learn what to share and what to keep private. While it’s important to be personable, I also wanted to maintain respect for myself and my business. I quickly realized that in order to attract the right clientele, I had to find a balance. Starting and running a business without guidance was challenging, but I figured everything out as I went along. Each lesson taught me something valuable about building my brand and maintaining professionalism.
