We recently connected with Paige Ballough and have shared our conversation below.
Paige, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
I started my career in bridal, as an assistant, while I was 16-18 and in high school. I learned SO much from Shelly and her team, and, in hindsight, would be dishonest in saying that I fully grasped everything I was truly learning at the time. Working primarily weekends and being part of someone’s special day always felt like exactly what I wanted to do, until I started building my own hair business. I had little understanding of the word “niche” or truly running a business professionally and what that truly means in the industry. I was working 7-10 days in a row, sometimes until midnight, doing traditional hair services in my salon, and taking weddings on the weekends. I was exhausted but thought that was the only way to ensure success and getting my name recognized in my area. Then I met Emily. She was a confident ray of sunshine with the most beautiful hair you had ever seen, and she was then my client as a random walk-in to my studio in Pineapple Grove, Delray Beach. She was the kind of polished, successful southern belle that hits you with inspiration when she talks about a simple cup of coffee, and she was a businesswoman with a high ranking in some big internationally recognized company. One day she and I got lunch after a highlight appointment together and she unapologetically told me that I didn’t value myself for the skill and artist that I am, and it was breaking her heart. I was taken back, as it was unwarranted, and it wasn’t said kindly, and I didn’t receive her intention until later in reflection. She was going on about my pricing being “insulting” and how I am all over the place trying to be a jack of all trades, and how just because I CAN do everything does not mean that I should. I sat there like a deer in headlights not knowing how to reply in anything other than defense. I ultimately knew I didn’t feel worthy or anything other than fear in sticking to doing only what I love, which was bridal hair. That lunch ended in tears, vulnerability, and a week of reflection. I was completely blindsided, and I am also the kind of strong headed woman who doesn’t usually value many peoples opinions, but this was Emily, and everything she said hit me like a brick wall. It was the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me, in business, because it knocked me off my high horse of illusion and set me on the path to all the things I needed to do to create the business, and life of my dreams vs. being a machine. I still thank her to this day.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
There are over 170,000 weddings per year in Florida, making about an average of 300+ weddings per day. I am sure there are plenty of stats to go on for salon services per day in Palm Beach, Fl area alone, but weddings are meant to be a once in a lifetime experience, an unforgettable memory. I am an empathetic soul, and there has always been something indescribable about being part of that joy for a woman and her loved ones. Too often in this industry, like any, I meet vendors who lack kindness behind their expertise, and I think that may be okay for some, but for most, we value a true human connection, and what we do is not “just another day at work”. Of course, being in south Florida, we treat hair a bit differently to account for the humidity and beachy breeze, and I have perfected my consultations to set a realistic expectation for each and every client on their desired hair results. But then I thought past the hairstyling and realized it’s more than hair, it’s how you feel. SO often we say, ” don’t touch the hair” or “brush your hair like this if your extensions separate” or “after the ceremony you can pull it up”… why? Why leave that thought to the bride? If there is anything I have seen as a pattern of MOST brides that I have encountered in my career, it’s that she doesn’t want to worry about anything on their wedding day, that’s why she hired vendors to make her wedding dreams come true! Majestic Hair started offering Bride Experience packages which are all inclusive and offers everything from trial, multiple artists or assistants to shorten the timeline, and most importantly, trailing time for wedding day. It is where I personally and completely shadow you for all things beauty, so my brides are completely taken care of for the entire day. To me, that is the definition of a bespoke experience, customized catering at a luxury level for both hair and makeup services ( I have a favorite makeup artist on my team as well). Because how a bride feels is directly connected to how she looks and her confidence in that shines through in her memory and in her photos! It embodies the definition of Majestic Hair. I of course still offer a la carte services and I do not take more than one wedding/booking per day.
In March 2021, I launched Majestic Extensions, a luxury quality, seamless hair extension line for brides and women looking for the added confidence in having the hair of their dreams for wedding day. I partner with luxury bridal hair stylists in offering the line to their brides and clients. Something else I noticed was brides often asking about extensions either for wedding day or in general, and most of my brides didnt know where to get them, or what’s worse.. they ordered them from an unknown source online and the hair melts because it is a synthetic blend. Majestic Extensions was my fix for this. I sourced 100% human hair from russia at the highest quality and created common blends as well as offer a customized blend for all of my brides. Why russian hair? They are known for quality and single sourced hair that last for years, if not a lifetime. It is the perfect compliment for all of my brides wanting the hair of their dreams with a seamless, undetectable, and damage-free option.
I want to be an example in changing the industry standard of hair and makeup being the last vendor many brides think of booking to the epitome of how she remembers how she is to remember feeling on her wedding day. I want to insist the value of the bespoke experience vs. “just hiring someone to come do hair and makeup”.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I started with instagram at its beginning, but I did not value it for the powerful tool that it was and has become. Last few years I learned about making an impact, following all the rules of posting, captions, hashtags.. all the things we constantly see and feel. It is easy to get burnt out with social media, and I feel it is an opportunity for a change in perspective. I super cringe when I hear another artist complaining about having to manage their social media and create content.. and my reply to that, perhaps because I have salon experience, is “then hire a marketing team or a social media manager or a virtual assistant”. Usually that is pretty expensive, and as a creative their results are always going to rely on YOU for the quality content. So as often as I considered outsourcing the task of posting or creating, I took responsibility for it and also recognized that i am not trying to be an influencer, I am creating a space for my brides and women to find me, be inspired by my work, and perhaps learn a bit as well. So my best advice is learn to get good at taking photos and videos of your work. Quality will always be better than quantity. Don’t just post to post. I took so many marketing courses for free, learned to use so many systems that are both paid and free only to realize these things. Just like my business, I dedicate the time that is going to work for me to maintain an online presence at a rate that does not burn me out. The following will come.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Keeping that social platform as well as prioritizing the human experience. I still have bridesmaids from weddings 5+ years ago reaching out and booking me for their weddings, photoshoots, and events because I have always valued the experience I deliver. I may not be the most famous in the industry, but I know that when my name is mentioned that it will always be that I did well and am remembered by how I made others feel.
