We recently connected with Page Mackenzie and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Page, thanks for joining us today. What’s something you believe that most people in your industry (or in general) disagree with?
Something that I believe that most people in the industry disagree with is the lack of representation of women in country music. It’s a topic that I think many tiptoe around or just ignore completely. There are groups, events, and people who do speak up but we can’t seem to break that barrier that is holding back the female influence in music. The numbers and statics would shock so many people if they would take the time to educate themselves. A quick story I experienced when I first moved to Nashville. I once was denied a road gig because the guys on the bus didn’t feel comfortable having a women on the road with them. I was shocked. I was equally if not more qualified then the man they decided to go with. Don’t get me started on radio play, female producers, touring… I mean, the numbers are insane & things need to change.
Page, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Page Mackenzie and I am a country artist from Charleston, SC. I moved to Nashville 7 years ago and haven’t looked back. I pride myself in staying as vulnerable as I can with my music, my social media influence and day to day interactions. I’ve never been afraid to let people see right into my personal life. I want to make sure people know they aren’t alone and we can get through anything that life throws at us. I want people to understand that we are constantly growing and changing so I let me fans see that and experience it with me.
Also, being 31 and still chasing this crazy dream is… hard. The industry puts a timeline on you and I wholeheartedly believe that is bullshit. (Excuse my language) If you have a dream, it doesn’t matter your age, you just work hard and be kind. Things will happen. They say Nashville is a “10 year town” and to be honest, I see why they say that. At year 7, I finally feel like I am meeting the right people, I’ve worked on my craft and really learned to appreciate what music does. The way it can heel, inspire and challenge you. Just keep going – that’s my advice to anyone second guessing themselves.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting a message or a comment that your song has helped someone through hard times. I don’t care if my song blows up on TikTok or has 100,000 streams. If one person reaches out to tell me how this song has helped them, i’m reminded that i’m doing the right thing by creating and telling my stories through music.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The MAIN resource that I wish I would have utilized earlier were the people around me. I was young and fearful of asking for help. There are so many incredible people in the industry that WANT TO HELP so ask. When you are in the music industry, one of the absolute most important things to do is find your people. Create a group that inspires you, supports you and wants to succeed together. This is how you will make it. This is how you succeed.
