We were lucky to catch up with Pablo Rene recently and have shared our conversation below.
Pablo, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Depends what you consider successful.
To me success is having financial freedom of bill anxiety and still have enough free time to dedicate to my passions of music and my dogs.
But to be super blunt, time.
Lasting success wont happen over night. You have to be honest with yourself and what you love to do. And when you find it, you have to invest the time to be able to stand out from the over saturated market of whatever you want to do to pay the bills. Time and experience are the best teachers and factors to success. Im a big believer in it takes atleast 10,000 hours to master something. And in the creative professional world, being a master at your craft is important for success.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Pablo Rene Anzueto , Im a 31 year old cinematographer and Composer in Fl. I love telling stories through music or video, but video has been the primary medium for what pays the bills :) I shot my first wedding in 2011 and since that first gig, I knew this was something I would love to do potentially the rest of my life ( future me not so much rest of my life anymore) but i still love what i do so Im in no rush to look for other ways to work.
Over the past decade i have learned everything i know at a wedding vs online or youtube. (Atleast in the beggining) but as i see more and more bundled photo and video wedding companies , they always seem to lack some depth in the edit. Especially bigger companies that just send footage to be edited by someone who wasnt at the wedding.
I believe one thing that sets me apart alot of other companies is , I am the director, shooter and editor of all my videos. But the true secret to my mojo is having learned to direct a couple to be natural and authentic. I would not throw any shot of the couple in a edit if i didnt feel it was genuine to their authentic beautiful selves.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I believe owning gear is important. Especially a camera that you want to learn how to use as an extension of your thoughts and not get too wrapped up on the what button does what. But if there is one thing i wish i did sooner was rent lenses and secondary bodies. The first couple of gigs youll probably spend a bit more than you make , but youll have portfolio quality of gear you wish you could afford in the beggining, and once you get a client convinced to book you , youll be able to throw in the extra costs of rental gear until you have grown enough to buy the gear flat out. But a second part to this answer would be also always learn how to use what you already have to tell your stories.
I have shot an entire documentary with just a T2i and tamron 17-35 and it is still one of my favorite stories ive told.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To me i like to have a balance of time that im not thinking about editing or shooting for a client. I love my 3 rescues and volunteer at my local shelter when i can. Changing lives with things that i can do is what i focus on. Like photographing shelter dogs so they have great pics. I believe we have all been given gifts, and its how we use those gifts to make any impact on anything other than ourselves thats important. Two of my dreams is to retire and start a animal rescue that helps foster local animals. And another is to have a non profit production company that specializes in telling stories of global non profits and the lives they impact. Marketing is important in the world we live in and i would love to help major non profit organizations keep the money on their logistics of helping, vs having to spend big budget on video marketing content.
Another big motivator for me is time.
I like to have free time to compose music as a passion i have been doing for about a decade as well. If im working too much with less time for my dogs and music then im usually much more grumpier during the week haha Time during day to let your mind wonder is so important!
