We recently connected with P.Gutter and have shared our conversation below.
P.Gutter, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you recount a story of an unexpected problem you’ve faced along the way?
Probably the most unexpected issues I ran into was the enormous amount of of money that I would have to invest in myself before I would ever start making money in the entertainment industry
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been releasing music under the name P.Gutter since 2010 During my music career I have worked with Grammy winning artists and producers like Dj Drama, 88 Keys, Jadakiss, Fat Joe, Redman, Jim Jones, Statik Selektah and many others
My mentor Charles “Drew” Stitt is from Buffalo, NY. He is the brother of Levi Ruffin who wrote and performed songs for Rick James and Stone City Band.
Drew taught me how to write, produce and record music. But before he would teach me any of that, he made me read books about the music business.
He always stressed to me that learning how business works is the most important part of the music business.
His guidance changed my focus from wanting to sign a record deal to wanting to start my own record label.
That mental shift ended up changing the trajectory of my entire life.
I currently own and run four businesses:(Damier Entertainment Group),
(Brick Oven Publishing)
(Home Baked Clothing Company)
(Trap Sole Kitchen)
Each one of my businesses come with their own list of challenges. I would have to say that out of all my companies, Home Baked Clothing is the one that I am most proud of..
I started Home Baked Clothing Company in 2014. Simply put Home Baked Clothing is streetwear that builds wealthy habits. The clothing line has a strong following and has been endorsed by celebrities including Jay Pharoah, Tony Rock and Mr. Cheeks just to name a few.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I am a huge believer in quality over quantity. Across all of my businesses the goal is to provide the highest level quality possible. From the product to the packaging to the marketing all the way down to customer service. My customers expect a high level of service because I have created that expectation.
I’m a firm believer that “word of mouth” is the best form of promotion and that doesn’t happen if you’re not striving for excellence.
I believe thats a huge reason why I’ve been able to have multiple companies be successful and have string followings.
The people know what to expect if my name is attached to a certain product or service. I am very consistent in that regard.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Finding capital to fund your business is just as important as having a great idea for a new business. The key is to know how much capital you really are going to need in order to operate effectively and sustain that business over time. I treated my 9 to 5 as my investor.
I would get an idea for a new business venture. Find out how much capital it would take to launch the business. Then save up my earnings until I had the funds I needed in order to launch.
Now once I formed 1 business that was successful I was able to use profits from that business as capital to start the next business and so on.
