We were lucky to catch up with P Butta recently and have shared our conversation below.
P, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
The day I decided to move to Florida was the biggest risk I’d ever taken in my life. See, Im from Illinois and I had never been away from home yet alone that far away. But one thing i knew loved was music. Hip hop to be exact. I listened to everything and recited their words like they were mine. I was never too shy or had stage fright. Shorty after that I became a hip hop artist. We would win the local talent shows in the area and started to gain recognition which would build my confidence. But I had just graduated high school and started community college. At that time, I felt like I was at a crossroad in my life. Being that I was becoming a man while making that transition I had to figure out what I really wanted to do with my life. But as a I got older and reality set in, I would start to doubt myself from money, self confidence and constantly making excuses for why I’m not advancing in my life. It was like I was falling into this vicious cycle. Especially when I would notice some of the people I went to school with going down the wrong path. Most were drinking, partying, doing drugs or ending up in jail. Some even dead. I never wanted to end up like that. I knew if I wanted something big to happen I had to do something big. So I packed up all of my stuff with my 2 of my best friends and we hit the road for Florida to further our education. And I can’t lie, it is probably one of the best decisions I ever made.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is P-Butta. VP of Animal Houze LLC. A premium entertainment company based out of California. I am Hip Hop Artist as well. I got in the industry just from loving music. Went to Full Sail University and got my degree in Audio Engineering. Whether it is recording a verse, post production, script and video treatment, I love provide service towards quality entertainment. I feel like my mindset sets me apart from most people. Since the pandemic I have learned not miss opportunities. A lot of people didn’t make it through this epidemic so I take that as something not to look over. I am most proud of my growth. It took a lot of life and experience to get me here and make me realize life is not to be taken for granted but to take advantage. I take my career very seriously. I think that’s what my fans value me the most. Knowing that if I release something it is going to be something of quality. It is my job to uphold that standard to everything that I do in life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
You have to respect everybody. That’s a lesson I had to learn. I say that because there was a time where somebody asked me to get on a song and I took my time. To be honest, I kind of brushed it off. Little did I know, the person who wanted me on the song really had big plans for it. I took too long and got replaced and the song came out to be a success. So from that point I treated everybody the same and respected their work, craft and especially their time!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Consistency. That’s what helped the most. The more persistent you are the better chance of people seeing you. There are a lot of things you can do. I have ran ads for promotional flyers and songs. I did a collaboration with a dancer in Las Vegas for one of my songs “Link Up”. She made a dance rendition to the song and a lot of her following transitioned to me which helped a lot. Aside of that, I participate in the social hashtags. Like throw back Thursday, flash back Friday so on and so forth. Another useful tool is to run a contest. Have your following like, comment and share your post for a change to win money, a merchandise item, whatever the case my be. All in all, I’ve learned that social media can be very useful towards your career.
