We were lucky to catch up with Ozzy Llanes recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ozzy, thanks for joining us today. Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
Took me under his wing . My cousin Jorge took the time to give a job when I got here from Cuba. It wasn’t only a job it was the best lesson I’ve ever gotten, pretty much taught me everything I know about business .
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In Augusts 2020 right in the middle of the pandemic I opened Cubanos ATL. The idea was simple , to bring a taste of Miami more specifically my Cuban roots to the people of Atlanta. We specialized in Authentic Cuban Sandwiches and Cuban coffee. we have 5 Sandwiches in our Menu , keeping things simple .
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I was born in Cuba and as we all know they have been going through a great deal of struggles for over 60 years since it became a Communist country. My parents understood that the only way to have a better life was to come to the US. We were lucky enough to have family here and they sponsored us. I came in 1995, I was 13 years old , we didn’t know any English so the first few years were tough trying to learn as much as possible. After high school I moved from Miami to Palm Beach were I learned a lot from my cousin that had his own business. While learning the business I went to school at night and got my college degree in Business Administration.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Not necessarily a lesson but more of breaking the mentality of many people from other countries ,The mentality of thinking small. I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by some greatly successful people that showed me the possibilities . The Hope that no matter where you came from if you learn, adjust and most importantly keep trying , no matter how many times you fail, you can succeed .
