We recently connected with Oxygyn and have shared our conversation below.
Oxygyn, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project we’ve worked on is actually coming to its crux in the coming days. On the 22nd of March 2024, we are releasing our first full-length album, entitled COMPOUND. We have been working on this record for the last few years, and through it, we wanted to tell the story of our growth and development in the musical scene. The album will consist of ten tracks, which include already released tracks, as well as brand new music. We have also published our first ever vinyl LP for this album, which is close to our hearts also because it is completely eco-friendly and made of recycled materials. This is truly a pivotal moment for our band, as with this album, we hope to continue leaving our mark on the musical scene, while also opening up a new chapter for our music.
Oxygyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
OXYGYN is an alternative indie-pop music outlet produces tracks which reflect the human and societal condition.
Composed of sibling vocal duo Katia and Kurt, with Zack Walters on guitars and Funky Monkey on production, our young band strives to leave a unique mark on the pop music scene. A core element of our music is lyrical and vocal content, which abstractly focuses on the complex paradigms of humanity. With a number of notable performances under our belt, Oxygyn is also gearing up to be a band to watch live.
Starting out our journey in 2015 with our first release ‘CORRODE’, Oxygyn has produced seven additional songs (‘BUBBLEWRAP’, ‘BLINDFOLD’, ‘VENOM’, ‘WICKED WHITE LIES’, ‘MERCY’, ‘PURGATORJU’, and ‘CLOUDMAKER’) which outline our artistic development from our indie-folk roots to darker electronic and guitar-led compositions.
Our aim is to encourage our listeners to not only hear our music, but to also sit back and reflect.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
Yes, there are. All our band members have come from humble backgrounds, and thus, financial resources to support our artistic endeavours were not always readily available. When we were just starting out, limited funding may have led us to question how much we can do and how far we can go in our musical journey. However, over the years we have learnt that creativity, teamwork and motivation are much more valuable resources to harness. At our core, we are a DIY band, so it’s not the first time that we built our own sets for events/music videos, or recorded our own material. All it takes is a can-do attitude and a willingness to work together to achieve a common goal. Ultimately, our resilience made OXYGYN what it is today, and even allowed for our band members to thrive, as for instance, Zack Walters (our guitarist) has now officially opened his very own recording studio, Ghoul Studio.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Honestly, society can best support artists even by starting with the little things. Attend gigs, buy merchandise, share music, follow artists’ socials. These are little things, which may come at little or no price to the individual listener in the grand scheme of things, but may actually allow artists to continue their careers in the creative sector, and may motivate them to create more art.
