Oxana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I’m a full time musician. It’s a lot to take on! You’re your own producer, boss, creative source, shrink, PR manager and bank account.
It didn’t happen overnight. At first, I was a school teacher and a community orchestra player with occasional gigs. What really helped me to create a full time job playing gigs of my cello performance degree was being active on social media and networking.
Oxana, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Oxana Cochran is a classically-trained cellist, currently living in Scottsdale AZ. She earned her cello degree in one of the top notch Eastern European conservatories. Oxana plays in a vast variety of styles in an energetic and fun way. She plays an acoustic and electric cello, either sitting down or walking around and engaging with audience. She’s been performing in different groups including Volgograd symphony, ASU symphony, Scottsdale Philharmonic and Symphonic orchestras, trios including current AZ THREE, quartets and solos providing premier entertainment for various audiences. For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is performing in front of people knowing that they are enjoying your craft!
How did you build your audience on social media?
With my audience on social media I started from scratch. I tried to be genuine, relatable and fun building my following one person a time. Posting daily about your life outside of music helps to paint a picture of who you are behind the stage
