Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Owen & Jennifer Johnston . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Owen & Jennifer, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?

In September 2021 Dr. Owen Johnston found himself without a job after being terminated by Kaiser Permanente in response to their mandates when his religious exemption was denied.

It was a pivotal moment in his life…did he get another job or risk it all and started Advanced Physical Therapy & Wellness? In Oct 2021 he dove all in and opened the doors to his business. With the momentum building at such a fast pace, his burned out “retired” Physical Therapist wife Dr. Jennifer Johnston joined the APT&W mission of helping millions avoid unnecessary imaging, surgery, pain medications and injections.

He could have done the comfortable thing finding the next job, instead risking it all has completely changed the path of both him and his wives lives and the 1000’s of people they have helped since.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We started Advanced Physical Therapy & Wellness in Oct 2021 in response to moral, ethical, and sincerely held religious beliefs surrounding a shift in healthcare. We started the practice subcontracting out of S10 Fitness in Point Loma for six months while gaining enough of a client base and start up capital to open the doors to our own brick and mortar location.

In May 2022 we moved from our first location to our current 1600 square foot office in Mira Mesa/Sorrento Valley.

Our mission is to save millions of people worldwide from unnecessary surgery. To accomplish this, we have ran countless workshops at local gyms, participated in community events, and created quite a few E-books for people to learn how to better help themselves.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

We truly believe our rapid success and wonderful reputation comes from the fact that we lead with giving value and serving others in the community. Since we first opened our doors our team has been found out in the community teaching workshops, offer complimentary dynamic cupping sessions and body work and so much more.

Once someone walks into our door they are greeted by first name, offered coffee, tea or water and never wait more than 5 minutes. We strive to be not your normal doctors office. Next your entire visit is spend one on one with a doctor of physical therapy, no aides or assistance. Our goal is to provide high quality care and truly help you reach your goals whatever they may be.

When you lead with others in mind, everyone wins in the end.

Any advice for managing a team?

Managing a team is the most rewarding and challenging part of business. There has been a lot of growth and learning in this area for us. Some of the things that have worked great for us are having weekly accountability meetings as a team. We have an agenda that everyone knows. This allows every team mate to participate and have their thoughts, ideas and feelings heard in a supportive environment.

We also try and sit down one to one with each team member for 30-60 minutes a month to truly check in on how things are going for them. Often times our team members come up with incredible ideas and are able to share them here. They often report feeling a sense of pride as they see their ideas come to life in our business.

Lastly we get together as a team outside of work once every 3-6 months to do something fun such as rock climbing, brunch etc. We are sure to include their significant others in these events so everyone can get to know each other.
