We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Owen Campbell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Owen below.
Alright, Owen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
Well, I always knew that I wanted to be a business leader, but I did not have the guts to start out on my own initially. some of my major mentors were also business owners, and I could see how this would be a unique challenge for me as I began practicing. I started by running clinics for other people and having success doing that. I was comfortable in a management position however, the draw of being my own boss was too much to pass up. So in 2003, I opened Simplify Motion Physical Therapy as a mobile physical therapy practice. When I started the practice, I just had a treatment table in the back of my car and the phone number of a few patients, who may have remembered me from treating at other places. Then started to network with other business owners, and other potential clients through my golf focus. Today I spend most of my time building my business for golfers and helping golfers get past performance plateau.

Owen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into physical therapy because I really like sports and I liked helping people. It’s the common origin story for most physical therapists, who treat athletes or orthopedics in general. What is unique about me is that I have spent 15 years practicing and I’ve achieved my board certification along with my doctorate. This is an extra level of qualification that puts me in the top 5% of the profession when treating the muscular skeletal system. I also spent time with the title performance Institute and I am a certified medical provider for Titleist. This allows me to treat golfers at the highest levels of the profession.
With my concierge in-home physical therapy service I really seek to give each patient what physical therapy should be. What I mean by that is that you get direct one on one care with the guy who got the degree as opposed to tech who reports to him. This allows me to make immediate changes to your plan, if we see a roadblock, or to step on the gas if we see that something is working really well. For golfers this has been very helpful because we have been able to make significant gains either in their ability to hit the ball longer or to play pain-free. With my knowledge of the golf swing and my knowledge of the body and healing times in general I am able to establish the most research backed plan of care and carry it out personally with each one of my clients. Concierge allows me to do this, and it allows me to focus on the actual treating of the patient versus the administrative work that typically comes with in-network insurance practice.
The Phoenix and Scottsdale markets are my primary area in which I practice. However, I also treat Cave Creek Tempe and Paradise Valley. My homebase is in Arcadia and I also see patients out of a fitness studio in the Arcadia neighborhood if they are needing heavier weights for performance training, or if they just don’t want to have to clean up their home before I come.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the big lessons I had to learn is that people are not willing to pay more than what their insurance pays for healthcare. When you are in a world where everybody asks “do you take my insurance?” You get that patience are OK with mediocre and are unwilling to pay for an excellent experience. In the last two years, I’ve really seen that patient value a good physical therapist and a strong diagnostician especially when they are trying to avoid surgery. This makes sense because the cost of surgery are way more than what a typical plan of care would be with me.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
It’s been very helpful that I’ve been treating in the Arcadia neighborhood of Phoenix for the past 12 years. This is allowed me to get deep connections not just in the Phoenix market, but the Scottsdale market as well. Physicians and all the major groups have had patients that have seen me while I was working in insurance base care, this allows me to have an easy conversation with them now that I am on my own. While it is hard for a doctor, who sees everybody under the insurance model to have a conversation about concierge care, I have had doctors say to me that once I start taking insurance, they will fill my schedule up within a few weeks. I am loving the work balance and the focus that I can bring to each patient, so this might not be something that happens for a while. It is comforting to know that Arcadia, Paradise Valley and Scottsdale doctors feel very comfortable working with me..
