We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Oveanah Mills a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Oveanah, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
About 3 years ago, after working a few dead end jobs, I finally decided to make a change. I pondered on the idea of becoming a nail tech but never committed to making it a reality. I absolutely wish I would’ve started sooner; one of the problems I ran into, aside from my own experiences on the client side of the desk, was that the information that was available was limited. Realizing the impact other nail techs had on social media motivated me to share my own experience in hopes of educating and inspiring others.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Oveanah Mills, I’m an ambitious and driven nail technician with an eye for beauty and a love for art. I aspire to pursue my dreams and in doing so, I advocate and inspire others to explore creativity for themselves. My personal experiences were what led me to become a nail technician. As a young adult working, I took a strong interest in keeping up with my appearance and self-care routines often. The more I got my nails done, the more I became interested in learning how to do nails for myself. As a licensed nail tech, I provide beauty enhancements
ranging from natural nails to artificial nails, including pedicures. I specialize in aromatherapy with oils, massage techniques such as reflexology, as well as more complex nail art. I want my potential clients/followers/fans to know that I value quality over quantity and that I am an open-minded entrepreneur. I’m most proud of the technique I provide in delivering my
services and the ability to make each and every experience unique.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Before I started nails, I was working 12 hour shifts 4-6 days a week making money to live and fund the start of my business. The more time and effort I put into working a hard labor job, the more I realized how unhappy it made me. I decided to quit and go after my dreams as a professional nail technician. When creating my own business, I wasn’t expecting the lack of clientele which caused a major delay in my plan. Instead of giving up, I decided to work my first job in a salon as a nail technician. Although I work for a salon, I still maintain my own business outside of doing so.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I’ve had to unlearn while starting my business has been, nothing comes at your own pace. This journey has shown me that no matter how much effort you put into doing something, good things take time to develop. In this field, you must remain patience, passionate and humble. Everyday is a new day to learn from your mistakes and to be better. With that being said, it’s also taught me that no matter how much you want to help others, you must focus on your own tasks to achieve your goals.
