We were lucky to catch up with Osungu Szpernalowski recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Osungu, thanks for joining us today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
Know your worth and refrain from being a “yes man”. Work smart and make it a point to have some knowledge about everyone else’s field ( within the company ) in the business.
This is especially important if your goal is to grow and someday manage the company or better yet, become an entrepreneur.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Osungu Szpernalowski and I am an entrepreneur, wife and a mom to a beautiful little girl. I was born in Douala which is a french speaking town in Cameroon/Cameroun. My 4 siblings and I attended private boarding schools from age 9 and then each moved to the States after we graduated.
As a child, I was quite shy except for when I was on stage during socials. Being a part of a girl band truly was the beginning of my love for the Industry. After moving to the the US, I immediately enrolled into the study of fine arts and my modeling agency at the time strongly advised me to take some acting class, which I dreaded. However, I quickly fell in love with the world of musical theatre and never looked back to modeling which was an absolute delight. So I quit modeling soon after I was crowned Miss Cameroon USA in 2007.
While attending school, acting and working for my father’s medical billing company, I knew that I wanted more out of life. I wanted to understand what it felt like working for someone else and understanding the world a little better because my childhood was a very sheltered one. So I got a part time summer job at Dillards which didn’t last long because I moved to Chicago to be with my fiancée and to study there. It was hard to not take the easy route by asking for my dad’s help but I was determined to find my own path and achieve my own goals without any help. Several years and many jobs later, my husband and I took a risk and decided to open our construction and remodeling company, thanks to his many years in this field and my knowledge of the hospitality industry. This of course is on the opposite spectrum of the creative industry. I am very grateful for how hard we worked and of how much we have achieved
My love for arts will always be there and as much as I’d love to return to theatre, being a mom is much more important to me. I couldn’t bare not being present for a recital or a tennis match. I think that this is why creating content brings me so much joy. I love sharing snippets of my life, timeless and classic fashion pieces, my skincare routine and the occasional cooking videos.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
When I started filming videos in 2016, I remember being completely obsessed with makeup. I had unreal amount of makeup in my vanity which would expire before I even had a chance to use it . Two years later, I decided to focus on skincare and better understanding my skin and loving it. . I will love for women to understand that skincare is truly important. When you have beautiful skin, you do not feel the need to cover it up. Put down the foundation and opt for a tinted moisturizer. Stop micro blading your eyebrows and instead invest in an eyebrow growing serum and the same goes for false eyelashes. As humans, we always want a quick fix but a slow burn is so much more better. Wouldn’t you want to actually have full eyebrows over microblading? Or naturally long and full eyelashes over false eyelashes?.
When it comes to luxury fashion which happens to be my weakness, I would love for more ladies to opt out of buying into trends. A timeless piece will not only safe you so much money but you wouldn’t feel like you are constantly chasing after the next shiny thing. This is not only bad for the planet but it’s detrimental to your finances.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I personally love finding new creatives with a small following. I love how true and authentic they are and it inspires me. I find that most people tend to follow someone with a larger audience which is rather unfortunate. There are so many talented musicians and artists out there with barely any following which means that their work will not be pushed my the algorithm. I recently started sharing their music on my IG stories and doing my part in hopefully getting them the exposure that they honestly deserve.
I would love for more people to not only like these creatives or artist’s work but to share them.
