We were lucky to catch up with Oshini Perera recently and have shared our conversation below.

Oshini, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.

We have many types of success stories as we help with a range of hair care issues at Sinha Hair. However, one customer’s story stands out among the others for us. This customer was one of our first and also inspired us to grow as a brand. They had hair loss, thinning hair along with a damaged scalp and contact dermatitis when they came to us. We just had our one oil which we sold in a mason jar with a normal label, at this time. We gave them a consultation, recommended a natural sulfate-free shampoo and as well as our growth oil. They bought our growth oil at the time from us, recommending it and they used it consistently, twice a week. After a month, they contacted us with results and a review that made us realize we need to continue our brand’s mission. In just one month, our growth oil had stopped their contact with dermatitis and her hair had showed new growth. She mentioned how at first it seemed like she was losing hair and this is common, as it is damaged or dead hair the oil is getting rid of. After a few months, she was fully confident about going out with her hair done. As her scalp had filled, her hair was soft and the texture had returned. To see our customer who could not leave the house without wrapping her hair, now finally able to be herself in public, with a flowing head of hair, was more than enough to inspire us to keep going. We want to bring these results to men and women around the world and show that natural hair care from our ancestors is an amazing journey filled with gorgeous results.

Oshini, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?

About 4 years ago, I was suffering from major hair loss and damage. I had barely any hair left after perms, bleaching and all the chemical products I was using. This is when my family finally convinced me to use our Sri Lankan hair oil. I was hesitant at first as I was too lazy to oil and to keep a routine, but once I hit rock bottom; I began using it consistently. Within a few months, I noticed a huge change in hair loss, texture and so much more. I kept using it, hoping I can return to my full head of hair. My hair was growing and flowing and I had many family and friends who also wanted to use the oil. I gave it to them at no cost and realized the results were endless.

After a year, my hair was almost 100% better. My hair loss stopped, my scalp was full, it grew at a much faster pace, honestly the benefits were endless. This is when I began Sinha Hair. The lockdown helped me focus on the brand in 2020 and Sinha Hair only grew from there. I planned many products with my family, including three different oils so anyone with sensitive scalps or oily scalps can also use our products. We formulated a sulfate-free shampoo, made with our herbal ingredients, which comes customized to your scalp and hair type, which became a star product. I have been using this shampoo for the past two years as well.

We make our recipes and products for royalty, and this is true. From ancient times, our recipes have been formulated by our Kings and Queens in Sri Lanka who were required to practice Ayurvedic healing. These ingredients are rare and have been used to aid in hair care for thousands of years. We use our 9-ingredient Ayurvedic plant mix, as all of our products are plant-based, with zero chemicals. We do not use any chemicals colours, preservatives or scents. Our 9-ingredients herbal mixture is infused into our miracle oils and then formulated into our products. Some of the hair care herbs we use in this mixture are Banyan, Amla, False Daisy, Vetiver and more!

We could not have done it without our loyal customer base, who constantly left us amazing reviews and inspired us to keep improving. Sinha Hair is in the process of getting our oils into retail stores currently. However our shampoo will always be online only, as it is the only sulfate-free shampoo personalized based on each individual. We hope we can continue to help our customers grow their hair healthy and free of chemicals while helping through struggling with hair issues overcome their battles.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?

When I started this business, it was with very little. As I was confident in the product itself, I wanted to test it in the market and see how it sells before I invest in professional branding. This is not the usual route, however it worked well for me. The oil sold without fancy branding, which gave me the confidence to invest more. At the beginning, I was in my basement and only invested in the bare minimum. Once I began making revenue, I invested the revenue into the brand and started the upgrading process.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Authenticity. Hair care is not an easy market as there are already well known brands as well as small brands that are popular. However, we knew Sinha Hair was not your usual hair care brand from the beginning. Our recipes are not only centuries old but no other hair company can personalize and combat issues at such a personal level with their customers. Thanks to our Ayurvedic expertise, we were able to work with a range of customers to help them reach their goals. From our oils to our personalized shampoo, we put care into every product as if it is made for our own family. Which is why we call our customers the Royal Family. Another reason is because our recipes derive from the ancient royal families of Sri Lanka who practiced Ayurveda. Even our ingredients are all exported from our island and which we grow in our family farms organically.
