We were lucky to catch up with Oshay Henderson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Oshay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
When it’s all said and done, I want to empower people to bet on themselves and win. I believe anybody can be successful, but success isn’t for everybody. Most people never live up to their full potential because they choose to play it safe. I’ve always been a risk-taker. Investing in myself has been the best decision of my life because I’m able to make things happen for myself rather than depend on others. If I were to disappear tomorrow, I think I’d be remembered mostly for my work ethic. I got to where I am today through pure grit. There’s a lot I haven’t done yet, so for now, I’m going to continue to pay my dues.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Oshay Henderson, known professionally as Mr. Angeleno, and I’m a content creator from South Central, mostly known for making YouTube skits. I started making skits in 2021, during the pandemic. Most of my skits revolve around personal experiences. What makes me standout from other content creators is my subject matter, storytelling, and production value. All my skits have an urban flair, but the subject matter varies; that way, my material never gets stale. Writing and directing go hand in hand; instead of writing Oscar-winning roles for actors I don’t have access to, I cast people I know in roles where, for the most part, they’re being themselves. Authenticity is everything, and even though I write all my material, the acting is what brings it to life. I’m big on production value. Even though I make a lot of beginner mistakes, my production value is higher than the average beginner. You can see the growth in my writing, directing, producing, and acting from skit to skit. I love my craft. I love making skits. I love making people laugh. As much as I love the skits, I’m eventually going to parlay them into bigger projects such as short films, feature films, and TV series. Until then, I’m going to keep striving at the level I’m at.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being creative is the process. Being able to come up with ideas and bring them to life is the closest thing to having superpowers. I pride myself on my creative process. I’m primarily a writer, but I made it a point to learn how to act, shoot, and edit so that I’m never dependent on anyone else and I can fill in where needed. I started from ground zero, and even though I’m still on the come up, I’m grateful for the journey because the journey is what makes my destination worth going to.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Most non-creatives have a “get a degree and get a career” mentality, which is cool if that’s your calling. My calling is creating, and because I don’t have the accolades, it’s easy for me to receive flack. Nothing is guaranteed just like having a degree doesn’t guarantee you a good job, but you’re guaranteed to go nowhere if you do nothing. I believe creatives are the most powerful beings on Earth. We create our own opportunities. We can do anything we put our minds to. Of course, there are steps that have to be taken, and usually the people with the most negative things to say aren’t where they want to be in life.
