We recently connected with Osha McCall and have shared our conversation below.
Osha, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
My company name came to me pretty easily. Initially, Something About Sunday was only used for the name of my podcast. When I decided to branch out and start selling products and services, I brainstormed a few names, but kept returning to SAS.
Something About Sunday is a feeling. Sunday is my favorite day of the week and when Sunday is done right, it feels good. It’s a day one should ease into and enjoy how they see fit. It’s the day before most folks have to return to their respective workplaces and get back to the grind. The podcast evokes thought and feeling and I wanted my company and all that it produces to have that same feeling.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Osha McCall and I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. I relocated to Baltimore, Maryland in 2021 for love and while on that journey I jumped head first into entrepreneurship. I’m currently balancing grad school, my corporate job as a HR professional and my company. If you’re into astrology I’m a Capricorn sun, Taurus moon and Virgo moon. Do with that what you will. :)
Something About Sunday is an intentional lifestyle brand that offers adult games and soon come, home goods and unique gifts. I also am the host of a podcast (of the same name) that can be found on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Soundcloud. The podcast is where I share my life experiences and life hacks for said experiences. I’m a photographer/visual artist and content creator. As I inch closer to my 40th birthday I fall deeper into my creativity bag and it’s been so satisfying.
I’m most proud of my game CONTROVERSY: The Game of Intention. Controversy is a questions game that consists of 70 cards. The design of the product from the box, each card, the texture and curated playlist are all elements I’m extremely proud of. I have received praise of the impact of this game from all ages and backgrounds. I’m so grateful that the game has been received the way that it has. The opportunity for intentional conversation is one I am happy to help facilitate through these cards. This game was birthed from an in-person event I used to host 10 years ago. It has been a beautiful journey.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The initial capital used to start my business came from my personal savings. I knew that if I were ever going to give this a real shot I had to put my money where my mouth was, so I did just that. I started putting money to the side during the beginning of the pandemic and when I was ready to go forward I moved that savings into a business savings account.
Literally everything cost money. Sure, you can DIY just about anything, but quality costs, so I put a couple thousand dollars to the side. I consulted the expert I have access to (shoutout to Jenell Gilyard) to determine what my needs would be. She is also the designer of all things Something About Sunday and went from there.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients has been by word of mouth. Since the game is an experience, I rely on my supporters to share it with those who think the experience is of value for those they encounter. So many of my orders have come from people I’ve never met from all over the country. It’s really been a beautiful way to connect with complete strangers.
