We were lucky to catch up with Oscar Lopez Jr. recently and have shared our conversation below.
Oscar, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I was (and still am) a big fan of Daft Punk. As a kid in the early 2010’s I would listen to their music constantly, but rarely were other kids my age interested in electronic music at all. I wanted to share my love and excitement for Daft Punk’s music with everyone around me, but nobody ever seemed to feel the same way I did.
As the years went on, I began listening to more artists of all different kinds of electronic music. These artists include (but are not limited to), Justice, Skrilllex, deadmau5, Knife Party etc.
Somewhere around 2013, I came across a video that I’d seen a few times over the years of Swedish House Mafia performing at Tomorrowland 2010. In this video, Swedish House Mafia is closing out the festival and one of the final songs they play is “One More Time” by non other than Daft Punk.
Seeing an enormous crowd dance and sing a long to the music that I love so much inspired me to become a DJ. At 13 years old, I made a promise to myself to become a successful enough DJ to one day perform at Tomorrowland and to play “One More Time” for the crowd. However, I knew that in order to reach that kind of success I’d need to become a music producer as well.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
As of 2023 I’ve been DJing and producing for a little over 10 years, but I’ve only been doing this professionally for about 8 years under my alias, “Oskier.” I started out within the electronic scene of Tijuana in 2015. That same year I performed for the first time ever at ‘Darkwoods Dream Festival” and I started taking music production classes in Los Angeles and eventually in Amsterdam as well. Since then, I’ve played at a multitude of different events and festivals while also releasing my music independently.
In early 2020, I began to familiarize myself with the electronic scene in San Diego. I was hoping to be invited to or booked for shows in San Diego that year, but of course the pandemic was in full effect. Since there were no live shows happening then, I, along with some fellow DJs, decided to host a series of livestreams called “Oskier And Friends.” A little over 2 years later, we’ve transformed those livestreams into live, in-person raves. So I guess now I’m DJing, producing music and hosting raves.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
In the aspect of music production, I want to revive what is essentially a dead genre. I make “Electro / Complextro” which is more or less “Dubstep” but at around 128bpm. It’s a style, that in my opinion, never reached it’s full potential and I’d like to hear more of it and or to see it evolve in some way. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I want to bring electro back.
As far as “Oskier And Friends” goes, I see it as somewhat of a showcase. I want to highlight DJs and producers of all different genres. Regardless of wether they’re locals or international headliners, I invite these incredibly talented artists because I’m a fan of their individual projects.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Within the music industry specifically, the best thing you can do to support an artist is to go see them perform live.
